Black Horse & The Cherry Tree Lyrics
Artist(Band):KT Tunstall
*two, three, four*
(woo-hoo-oo,woo-hoo)
(woo-hoo-oo,woo-hoo)
Well my heart knows me better than I know myself, so
I'm gonna let it do all the talking
(woo-hoo-oo,woo-hoo)
I came across a place in the middle o' nowhere with a
Big black horse and a cherry tree
(woo-hoo-oo,woo-hoo)
I felt a little fear upon my back, I said
Don't look back, just keep on walking
(woo-hoo-oo,woo-hoo)
When the big black horse said look this way, he said
"Hey lady, will you marry me?"
(woo-hoo-oo,woo-hoo)
But I said
"No, no, no, no-no-no", I said
"No, no. You're not the one for me.
No, no, no, no-no-no", I said
"No, no, you're not the one for me."
(woo-hoo-oo,woo-hoo)
And my heart hit a problem in the early hours, so I
Stopped it dead for a beat or two
(woo-hoo-oo,woo-hoo)
But I cut some cord and I shouldn't have done it and it
Won't forgive me after all these years
(woo-hoo-oo,woo-hoo)
So I sent to a place in the middle o' nowhere with a
Big black horse and a cherry tree
(woo-hoo-oo,woo-hoo)
Now it won't come back 'cause it's oh, so happy and
Now I got a hole for the world to see, yeah
(woo-hoo-oo,woo-hoo)
And it said
"No, no, no, no-no-no", it said
"No, no. You're not the one for me.
No, no, no, no-no-no", it said
"No, no, you're not the one for me."
(whoo-hoo-oo,woo-hoo) *Not the one for me, yeah*
(whoo-hoo-oo,woo-hoo)
I said, "No, nah, no, no,
No, no, no, No, no,
you're not the one for me
No, nah, no, no,
No, no, no, No, no,
you're not the one for me"
Big black horse
And a cherry tree
I can't quite get there 'cause my heart's forsaken me, yeah yeah yeah
Big black horse
And a cherry tree
I can't quite get there 'cause my heart forsaken me

Review about Black Horse & The Cherry Tree
The ever-so-confusing song | Reviewer: kaitlyn | 8/19/2008this is how i would explain the song if i had to:
big black horse= a guy that loved KT Tunstall
cherry tree= a woman that loved the guy
so at first she wasn't sure about this guy that 'asked her to marry him' because she new that he had broken up with some other girl who still loved him and after a couple years after she left him, she came back to find that he had re-fallen in love with the other girl and he was no longer avalible for her to take... it's still confusing even when someone explains it but still that's what i think this song is about.
KT's tells the meaning of this song | Reviewer: Bamagal | 5/13/2008
From another website, located the meaning of this song from KT herself: It amazes me how many different interpretations dervied from such a simple-thought song which was written simply from seeing a horse who had broken free. How awesome!
In The Guardian newspaper of February 24, 2006, Tunstall explained: "It's a metaphor for good and evil. One summer, I was traveling in Greece on a little moped and this massive black horse had broken free in an olive grove and was going nuts. It looked apocalyptic: a seed was sown. I wrote the song years later in a tiny studio in Shepherd's Bush. I was about to tour Scottish coffee shops and was worried about coming across like Phoebe from Friends. At the same time I saw a brilliant guy called Son of Dave who looked like a ginger nylon 1980s' Elvis: really raw blues with just voice and effects. I got a pedal and one of my techie friends helped me put myself and my guitar through it. It's probably the most scientific I've been, but the song was written in a 10-minute burst. The lyrics where my 'Heart stops dead' refer to a heart murmur I had as a baby. I got into this fantasy that my heart felt betrayed and had decided to stop working. The song is about having to dig incredibly deep to find out who you wanna be." (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England)
stirring fiery song | Reviewer: alease | 3/13/2008
I think this is about a "good girl" who passes up a chance at a romance with a "forbidden, dangerous,"experienced"man. The "cherry tree" is a reference to the girls virginity. She tells herself that she does not want this man, that he is wrong for her.Down inside she desperately desires him.She "cuts him loose",gets far away from him,out of fear of what people would think, and fear of the dark passions he stirs in her.Years later she regrets it,and wants to be with him,but he has found love with another woman many years ago.The woman feels a great sense of loss and loneliness. She wishes with all of her soul that she would have followed her heart and taken the risk to gain this mans love when she had the chance. The chance will never come again......Alease

Cherry Tree is a TC word | Reviewer: Neigh Bor | 11/7/2007
The horse it was big, so this must be a big event.
The cherry tree. It was cut down (supposedly) by George Washington and now this song is reviewing that event to determine if it actually happened. The horse is there to show strength, albeit only one single horsepower.
The horse is black. Black is an allusion and an illusion. Black is strength, majesty. Being rescued is usually on a horse of white color. (Frankly if needing rescue the actual color plays little importance when selecting the horse.) Magic is sometimes black, good and evil, shadow and light. A dark horse is a political overture. Is the author and singer more clever than initially thought?
Those aspects of humanity are simple to see. The part about marriage and then a kazoo break after the marriage (what happens during this non verbal interlude?) needs more time for analysis.
Why was the horse asking is the puzzlement. Consider that the writer knew that the singer is stunningly hot and worked this in so live audiences would see her and know and get it.
I do this for a living, plz do not attempt at home.

I took the cherry tree to mean truth. And the black horse as temptation. And that our biggest regrets are not what we did, but what we didn't do when we had the chance.
Simply Put..... | Reviewer: Diane | 9/27/2007
KT is taking about someone who confronted w/engaging her heart, denied it. Then when her heart longed for that connection she'd denied it and she sent it to that place w/out her. After a time she wanted to go to that place she'd sent her heart and her heart turned around and denied her.
first time/ lifetime | Reviewer: john Box | 8/21/2007
i feel that kt has spoken about a young lady who has expeienced lust and love for the first time, with trepidation and hesitancy. The big black horse signifying the darker side of life. the decision to continue "don't look back just keep on walking". The ensuing promiscuity whether he "was the one for me" then to be taken advantage of, after gestation "she
cut some cord and she shouldn't have done and now she's got a hole for the world to see". the child has little to do with the mother, who has subsequently lost the father. the father and child have KT's heart but they have forsaken her. sadly she's left with a hole where her heart used to be.
