On Riff Raff, the fledgling Bragg band:
In June (1979) they hopped up another rung on the
legitimacy ladder, when Chiswick put out their first
single. In fact, they put out three separate singles on
the same day as a conceptual set called Suburban
Rock'n'Roll: Riff Raff's Cosmonaut EP (containing "I wanna
be a cosmonaut", "Romford girls", "What's the latest" and
"Sweet as pie"), The Jook EP by The Jook (they were
fancifully tipped as the new Slade) and the Make a Record
EP by The Drug Addix (notable for being Kirsty MacColl's
first release, and for the provocative title of its lead
track "Gay boys in bondage"). Each single was a 4,000
copy limited edition.
On "A new England"
Played "as live" - not much of a surprise bearing in mind
the economical nature of Bil More...

------ About the song From Red To Blue performed by Billy Bragg
Odd, that here in America that red and blue have opposite political meanings, then in most (if not all) of the english speaking world. We can't do anything right. We drive on the wrong side of the road, call crisps chips and chips french fries (or god forbid freedom fries, YUCK!), bastarize rugby and call it football and then call football soccer, and not to mention we write long ass compound sentences...like this.

------ About the song The Saturday Boy performed by Billy Bragg
Though Billy has a reputation as a political writer, he is the master of the bittersweet love song. There are several in his early work, capturing an air of yearning and loss, and Saturday Boy is redolent with a sense of disillusionment even in the midst of discovery.
How may of us have some version of ‘dancing in the darkness in the school canteen’, and of the girl we adored but who never really seemed to notice us, or indeed went to ‘those’ parties to which we were not invited?
I think Billy ranks with Morrissey for his love songs, both being peculiarly British in their evocation of melancholy – both boys who never seemed to get the girl?
i love this song. it's so comically true. eg, "in a perfect world we'd all sing in-tune. but this is reality so get some room." or "so join the struggle while you may, the Revolution is just a T-shirt away"
i first heard this song on a television show with dawn french and catherine tate in it, called "wild west". now that i've thoughroughly read the lyrics i can't say that i understand why they had it on there because it doesn't really relate that much to the show. but i like it all the same [=

This is a very nice poem, very visual and well written. The one correction is the missing 'e' in Barrett.

------ About the song The Short Answer performed by Billy Bragg
A classic example of Bragg examplifying the beauty of adolescent love. Mirrors my affections exactly. Beautiful lyrics, expertly matched to the music.
10/10
I love the lyrics to this - the song is written by Leon Rosselson, who has many good songs. Billy's honest rendition is perfect; it fills me with fierce indignation, and feeds my determination to resist the greed of the powerful and corrupt.

------ About the song Ingrid Bergman performed by Billy Bragg
Woody Guthrie lyrics and Billy Bragg music. What could go wrong? This song is hauntingly melodic and lyrically simple. I fell in love with it the first time I heard it.

------ About the song Everywhere performed by Billy Bragg
One of the most beautiful, powerful... haunting songs I've ever heard. A true listening experience on CD, but even more hard-hitting when Bragg does it live. Saw him sing it in Atlanta and it was one of those rare moments when you can hear a pin drop in a crowd of 3500 people.

------ About the song Little Time Bomb performed by Billy Bragg
This man is a f'n legend!
As I heard him first in the early 80's. I love his music 20+ year later. This is a great song, great guitar and classic Billy!
Just about the funniest and most self refferential piece from the un-crowned commisar of proletarian folk rock. This is proof positive that catchy doesn't have to mean mindless. References to the Kennedy dynasty, nuclear arms and political activism versus apathy all wrapped up in an increasingly up tempo, toe tapping tune - and it works in spades!
Beam me up, Billy!

------ About the song Remember The Mountain Bed performed by Billy Bragg
One of the most honest and real, lost love songs ever writen. Woody Guthrie at his finest. Jeff Tweedy really shines on this one too.
