Big Shot Lyrics
Performed by Billy JoelReview The Song (12)
Well, you went uptown ridin' in your limousine
With your fine Park Avenue clothes
You had the Dom Perignon in your hand
And the spoon up your nose
Ooh, and when you wake up in the mornin'
With your head on fire
And your eyes too bloody to see
Go on and cry in your coffee
But don't come bitchin' to me
Because you had to be a big shot, didn't cha
You had to open up your mouth
You had to be a big shot, didn't cha
All your friends were so knocked out
You had to have the last word, last night
You know what everything's about
You had to have a white hot spotlight
You had to be a big shot last night
And they were all impressed with your Halston dress
And the people that you knew at Elaine's
And the story of your latest success
You kept 'em so entertained
But now you just don't remember
All the things you said
And you're not sure that you want to know
I'll give you one hint, honey
You sure did put on a show
Yes, yes, you had to be a big shot, didn't cha
You had to prove it to the crowd
You had to be a big shot, didn't cha
All your friends were so knocked out
You had to have the last word, last night
You're so much fun to be around
You had to have the front page, bold type
You had to be a big shot last night, Oh oh
Oh Oh whoa whoa oh, Oh Oh whoa who-oo-oo-oo-ah,
Oh Oh Oh whoa whoa oh, Oh Oh whoa.
Well, it's no big sin to stick your two cents in
If you know when to leave it alone
But you went over the line
You couldn't see it was time to go home
No, no, no, no, no, no
You had to be a big shot, didn't cha
You had to open up your mouth
You had to be a big shot, didn't cha
All your friends were so knocked out
You had to have the last word, last night
So much fun to be around
(LIVE VERSION ON 3RD CHORUS ONLY: "You know what everything's about")
You had to have the white hot spotlight
You had to be a big shot last night, Oh oh
Oh Oh whoa whoa oh, Oh Oh whoa.
Big shot … Big shot … Big shot … Mmmm … Big shot … Whoa whoa!
Big shot …

True storie | Reviewer: Ray | 6/20/11
Yep..it's a true storey, but Mr Joel was not on a date with Jagger's wife, only hanging out with them that night. Sort of a 3rd person POV on some one that was having a good time for the whole club. Quite unique a prospective as far as writing goes.
Groupie Song | Reviewer: Sam | 2/21/11
Although it may not be a song about how stupid groupies make themselves look, it sure makes a good precedence.
Groupies always try to blend in with the band or impress one particular member, try get drunk and stoned trying to keep up with them who normally party on a regular basis, and end up making a mockery of themselves. Because they had to be big shot…
Super-catchy kick-ass song! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/30/10
I saw Billy Joel perform this song in San Francisco when I was 8 or 9 years old, and he was being a total big shot, running all around the stage! He put on such a great show I still remember it 30 years later!
Billy Joel, unforgettable | Reviewer: monica | 8/8/09
There was a time when I did not understand all the words of
the big shot song, just most, and I always loved it.
I have met quite a few people now where the song could have been written about them. Great insight into attention-seeking people...

I love the quality of his voice! It is almost reedy. My friends and I all love his music and one in particular can sing all the lyrics of all the songs with me. Even the obscure ones. I love this song, it just bursts with feeling.
Billy Joel! | Reviewer: Narumi | 1/23/09
I love this song and just about all of his other ones! I'm proud to say I'm a fourteen year old life-long Billy Joel fan!
I love his voice and the music is magnificent. I argue with my dad, who is also a huge fan, about the quality of the lyrics, which I believe is very high.

This is a really good song of Billy Joels,(all though all his song are good this is one of his best)
And It shows how some people just are: selfish, they like alot of attention, and usually they never go far in life, well mostly never.
Sincerely,
~Jennifer~
About a Bad date with Micks ex-wife | Reviewer: Richie | 11/9/07
Dont know if this is true but several people claim that this song was based on a bad date that Billy had with Mick Jagger's ex-wife Bianca Jagger. Never heard the song myself, but the description seems to fit her to a T during her Studio 54 days. Dont know if it is true though.

I love the line 'and a spoon up your nose'. That makes me smile every time I hear it. Billy's sarcasm and cynicsm is unparalleled. This is such a great song, as are the rest of his songs.
a song i can relate too | Reviewer: KAilawyn | 6/1/07
A very true song about people who love attention, his feelings that he explains during the song is something i can definately relate too.
