This is probably the saddest love song I've ever heard. The despair of Jacques Brel (the original singer) is so strong, so vivid, my heart stops every time I hear him. He is very in love and for that he has no more honor, praying, begging the loved one that she doesn't live him. The despondence and the terror go so far, that he asks her to allow him to at least be the shadow of her dog.
