No one knows what it's like to be the bad man
To be the sad man behind blue eyes
No one knows what it's like
To be hated, to be fated to telling only lies
But my dreams, they aren't as empty
As my conscience seems to be
I have hours, only lonely
My love is vengeance that's never free
No one knows what it's like
To feel these feelings like I do and I blame you!
No one bites back as hard on their anger
None of my pain and woe can show through
But my dreams, they aren't as empty
As my conscience seems to be
I have hours only lonely
My love is vengeance, that's never free
When my fist clenches, crack it open
Before I use it and lose my cool
When I smile, tell me some bad news
Before I laugh and act like a fool
And If I swallow anything evil
Put your finger down my throat
And If I shiver, please give me a blanket
Keep me warm, let me wear your coat
No one knows what it's like to be the bad man
To be the sad man behind blue eyes

Review about Behind Blue Eyes About Big Brother | Reviewer: Brent | 9/4/09
This song was a key element of the abandoned "Lifehouse" project. The song describes the bad man who is big brother to all humanity, a dictator who controls the masses with propaganda. He cannot show weakness so he cannot smile or show anger. He is in control of all and Townshend is writing about the character's feelings which he cannot share to anyone. It is his loneliness that makes him vulnerable in his isolation. I picture the Apple commercial from the 1984 Superbowl when I think of this character, whom Pete named "Jumbo"

You miss the point. | Reviewer: Rauðbjørn | 1/30/09
Behind Blue Eyes is not about appearance, it's not about the inherent sameness of the "unique" human condition. This song is about a "bad man" not a junkie, or some white collar thief, but a truely "bad" man. A sociopath, or a borderline personality disorder. It's the internal monologue of this person trying to understand why he's diferent, and only finding that he is, but knowing that he is not the uncaring, unfeeling monster that society paints him to be.
This song really is the anthem of the Harris & Klebolds of the world. Those rejected by their peers, not for what they have done, but for what they are. And then finally, for what they become.
As a music lover | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/21/08
I would have to say Durst did a pretty good job. I'm not a big fan of his because he obviously let's his mouth write checks his @$$ can't cash. Creed and frontman Stapp should have presented Durst with more than an anger management manual, Stapp should have kicked the crap out of him. I guess he found a less violent way though. Oh well. And yes they did leave out a great part of the original lyrics. Guess it didn't go well with Durst's video. Great remake though.
Oh, Cheer Up! | Reviewer: Paul | 10/16/08
This song is a work of art; whatever Townshend's motives or circumstances when he wrote it, he produced from them something that illustrates the human condition in a beautiful and moving way. All of us are living behind blue eyes, within the isolation (or separation) that humans have probably felt since the evolution of language (or at least since the evolution of modern consciousness). The desire to overcome that sense of separation, and the fear and self-defeating behavior it produces, is what led us to create religion, philosophy, and psychology. And "fated to telling only lies" is a fine summary of what's to be learned from the study of semantics. Best Who song ever.
The non-minority | Reviewer: Eric | 10/10/08
As a person who happens to be a white man with blue eyes, i didn't get this song at first.
A man who has blue eyes is not a minority in many ways. It's easy to blame things on the majority. Especially by how people look on the outside.
My life is just as hard as anyone else's, my features may have a stigma of being an advantage, but it's pretend. The stigma of white men being evil is also something that is real.
We all face adversity with how we look.
It's like how beautiful women have the same struggles as everyone else. People assume they get special treatment and they dislike them for it.
Redemption | Reviewer: Brad | 9/26/08
I believe that's what the original is about. The lyrics in the first two stanzas speak of all the negative feelings and aspects of the speaker (telling lies, full of vengance), then the final stanza the speaker asks that same person for help.
I'm not a christian. I live in Japan and more closely follow eastern philosophies, but I can see how someone who is christain could make the correlation between this and the jesus myth.
Anyway you look at it it speaks of the duality of man and no one can argue with that. We are all many-sided and complicated beings.
Have always loved the Who, and especially this song... | Reviewer: Pator TJ | 9/20/08
As a teenager raised on the Who, I've always loved their music and especially their lyrics. Now that I'm in my 50's and a Pastor who teaches verse by verse through the Bible, "Behind Blue Eyes" is very touching. Each one of us can relate to this song, or will relate to this song, because if we love someone, eventually their will be pain that cuts to the heart. To those going through this pain I would encourage them to find the comfort I've found in Jesus. A good starting point is found in Matthew 11:28.
God Bless,
TJ

Our song. | Reviewer: crj | 7/21/08
This song has a deep meaning for me and my boyfriend. We've been together for seven months and each day is so hard, because everyone is against us all the time. And its also hard for me cause I love him and he doesnt love me too. He's told me, he's said he may learn to love me. I dont know, but this song is our song.
