Battle of Bull Run Lyrics

Review The Song (1)Print the Lyrics
The sun shone bright and clear that day
We all left Washington
To lick the Rebel boys in grey
At the Battle of Bull Run
They came from Pennsylvania and some from Maryland
To see the Rebel boys get spanked by Honest Abe’s broad hand

We said we’ll run ‘em to Atlanta and to Galveston Bay
But they ran us back to Washington and Philadelphia
And Philadelphia

The ladies wore their brightest shawls
The gentlemen were gay
They came to see their Yankee boys whip old Virginia
I held my momma’s hand and skipped
When a soldier said to me
Would you rather have Jeff Davis’ hat or the sword of Bobbie Lee

We said we’ll run ‘em to Atlanta and to Galveston Bay
But they ran us back to Washington and Philadelphia
And Philadelphia

And then the general doffed his hat and said let’s rest a spell
And for the first time we all heard that awful rebel yell
The waters of Manassas Creek became a ruby red
and many a Reb and Yankee boy lay in the willows dead

We said we’ll run ‘em to Atlanta and to Galveston Bay
But they run us back to Washington and Philadelphia
And Philadelphia

A fight locked in the chest of time too horrible to tell
Virginny’s cool green countryside became a lake of hell
Don’t count your chicks before they’re hatched
Or your work until it’s done
Remember yes remember long the Battle of Bull Run

We said we’ll run ‘em to Atlanta and to Galveston Bay
But they ran us back to Washington and Philadelphia
And Philadelphia

Review about Battle of Bull Run

Battle of Bull Run - drum & banjo coordination | Reviewer: Julian Janik | 9/14/2007

When I heard this song on the Johnny Horton Makes History Album, I was fascinated how the drums and banjo were coordinated together in the song. Especially at the end of the song when the drums and banjo have a little picking rhythm going together. This is so neat and admirable. I can visualize the drummer and banjo player keeping in tune with one another bringing the song to a grand finale.
The Battle of Bull Run has become one of my favourite songs. I often play it 3 times in a row. The banjo and pounding of the drums at the beginning gets me. You can visualize the soldiers on the battlefield, the drums beating and the cannons ready to fire.
This is one thing I always admired about Johnny Horton and his songs, especially the history songs like Sink The Bismarck, Battle of New Orleans, The Battle of Bull Run and others.
The drums and the banjo are used to good effect. They bring out the feelings and important value to the songs.
You don't hear too much, anymore, in the way Johhnny Horton recorded these songs. The only other song I heard which is similar to Johnny Horton,s is by Claude King titled, The Battle of Atlanta.
Another song to admire is Jimmy Dean's PT 109.
But! there will never be another Johnny Horton who recorded historical songs like Johnny Horton. God Bless Him!
He will be missed.
