Ball Of Confusion Lyrics - The Temptations
Review The Song (16)
People movin' out
People movin' in
Why, because of the color of their skin
Run, run, run, but you sho' can't hide
An eye for an eye
A tooth for a tooth
Vote for me, and I'll set you free
Rap on brother, rap on
Well, the only person talkin'
'Bout love thy brother is the preacher
And it seems,
Nobody is interested in learnin'
But the teacher
Segregation, determination, demonstration,
Humiliation, obligation to our nation
Ball of Confusion
That's what the world is today
The sale of pills are at an all time high
Young folks walk around with
Their heads in the sky
Cities aflame in the summer time
And, the beat goes on
Air pollution, revolution, gun control,
Sound of soul
Shootin' rockets to the moon
Kids growin' up too soon
Politicians say more taxes will
And the band played on
So round 'n' round 'n' round we go
Where the world's headed, nobody knows
Just a Ball of Confusion
Oh yea, that's what the wold is today
Fear in the air, tension everywhere
Unemployment rising fast,
The Beatles' new record's a gas
And the only safe place to live is
On an indian reservation
And the band played on
Eve of destruction, tax deduction
City inspectors, bill collectors
Mod clothes in demand,
Population out of hand
Suicide, too many bills, hippies movin'
To the hills
People all over the world, are shoutin'
End the war
And the band played on.

It's the SOS, just a different year, different place, different people | Reviewer: Russ | 3/6/14
The problems that were mentioned in this song are likely never going to be truly solved, as human nature always prevails. Power still corrupts, oppression still angers the oppressed and they eventually fight back and sometimes win, most politicians still are criminals in suits (like Putin) and if it's not one thing, it's another. The bad never goes away, just changes teams and venues, and the good has to keep on keepin' on to prevent the bad from winning. Welcome to reality...
great song during a pivotal era | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/1/13
play and sing along loudly to this song (Ball of Confusion), then Sabbaths "war pigs", and Beatles Revolution and Heleter Skelter. The late sixties and early 70's memories come flooding back into the brain with vividness. I grew up in Urban NY at the time. The times they were a changing. Only problem is....the same sellout politicians are still ruining this country, the enviroment, and killing off our youth with their money making wars. "And the band played on" like on the Titanic while the ship was sinking. Good Luck to ALL Americans. From a white man from NY.

Matt, your observation on the ' Ball of Confusion' about the Beatles Abbey Road LP and how it relates to how things were in the U.S. ( you weren't specific when you said America) is total hogwash. If you took time to read the lyrics of the song it definately speaks to and about the world, not just to the 20 or so countries in the Americas'!
Beatles song @Dan Sanchez | Reviewer: Matt M. | 6/5/13
They are talking about abbey road. In ebonic speech, 'gas" means it "goes, takes off"
basically they are saying the beatles are hot because people want to hear something different, something nice, but they don't want to recognize the truth of living here in america

The Supremes are the greatest "soul" group of all time. With 12 #1 hits they far outclassed The Tempations. Don't get me wrong, I loved The Temptations and Ball of Confusion is one of my favorite Motown hits, but the Supremes were in a class all by themselves.
White Kid | Reviewer: Jeff Parker | 11/2/10
The temptations are the greatest soul group of all time, no other group is even in their league! I was the only white kid in Idaho that I knew that listened to them. They were my favorite group. I bought every 45 record they released. I first heard Ball of Confusion on the local radio station. It had just been released and there was a contest to name the song bssed on the Lyrics. I was the third caller and I won. The prize - a 45 rpm record of the song. I wore it out and bought another won. It is a timeless song by Timeless performers.
Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow Ball of Confusion | Reviewer: Clarence Thompkins | 4/16/10
The Temptations is one of my favorite R & B groups. " BALL OF CONFUSION " is one of my favorite songs ever. The lyrics are the gospel truth. Believe me the World is a " BALL OF CONFUSION " yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Classic soulful sounds of the past.... always seem to reachout and remind us of the good ole days. The lyrics and the message are still as clear and timeless, just right for living in the world today,it makes it easy to cope/to atone.Songs like this and the Bible makes it all worth while........Jo-B-K'09
timeless perfection | Reviewer: erica | 11/28/08
Last time I heard this song on the radio, I was cruising up West Grand Boulevard in Detroit last summer, right past the Motown Museum, with "Ball Of Confusion" pounding out the car windows, singing along who-cares-how-loud. If you like your tunes with some meat on their bones, you need a good helping of this.
Powerful Motown | Reviewer: zipzap | 11/21/08
This song could appear if it were just written yesterday, considering the current times; gun control, unemployment, taxation, war, national loyalty, etc. But... The band played on!
A remake would surely ruin it's pure genius and spirit. I don't like remakes of the great classics, with rare exception. The original is a must hear!
Motown's most interesting group | Reviewer: Colin, London | 5/23/08
I think the Temptations were the most interesting group in Motown history. Of sourse, they went through many changes of lineup, but some things were very distinctive, such as David Ruffin's gruff vocal, the slightly smoother sound of Dennis Edwards, the falsetto of Eddie Kendricks and of course the rich baritone of Melvyn Franklyn. Of those four, I believe only Edwards is still with us.
As for the group's material, they had the gentle ballads like My Girl, Since I Lost My Baby, It's Growing and Just My Imagination, mid-tempo tunes like Ain't Too Proud To Beg and Treat Her Like A Lady, and hard hitting social commentaries like Cloud Nine, Ball Of Confusion, Take A Look Around, and Papa Was A Rolling Stone. The only one of their big hits which doesn't seem to slot into any category is the party style Can't Get Next To You.

WOW what a song and what a group! This is an amazing song that is so strong even now with things being what they are. The frustration just builds in the song and then BANG! they come streaming in with "ball of confusion." The beat and the tempo are perfect, the entire song is very well put together.
Modernize | Reviewer: James Moore | 11/7/07
Great song! It brings back memories of when my dad would play the Temptations over and over on the turntable. This was way back when 45s were not just bullets.
It would be interesting if some progressive band or hard core rap group would work the lyrics a little and remake this song. Throw some references to out-of-control starlets and terrorism and you've got a hit!
Tesla cover rocks hard, great groove. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/28/07
I havent heard the original version, just Tesla's cover of it on their Reel to Reel cd. I was shocked to find out it was a temptations tune, as it was kinda of heavy and guitar-ladden to be a mo-town tune, plus all the other covers on the cd are really true to the originals. Well I guess i should go find an original copy and check it out, TESLA rips this one, a must hear.
