Ball And Chain Lyrics - Social Distortion

Review The Song (13)

Well it's been ten years, and a thousand tears
And look at the mess I'm in-
A broken nose and a broken heart,
An empty bottle of gin
Well I sit and I pray
In my broken down Chevrolet-
While I'm singin' to myself
There's got to be another way
chorus:
Take away, take away
Take away this ball and chain
I'm lonely and I'm tired
And I can't take any more pain
Take away, take away
Never to return again
Take away, take away
sponsored links
Take away
Take away this ball and chain
Well I've searched and I've searched
To find the perfect life-
A brand new car and a brand new suit
I even got me a little wife-
But wherever I have gone
I was sure to find myself there-
You can run all your life
But not go anywhere
chorus:
Take away, take away
Take away this ball and chain
I'm sick and I'm tired
And I can't take any more pain
Take away, take away
Never to return again
Take away, take away
Take away
Take away this ball and chain
Well I'll pass the bar on the way
To my dingy hotel room-
I spent all my money
Been drinkin' since a half past noon-
I'll wake there in the mornin'
Or maybe in the county jail-
Times are hard getting harder
I'm born to lose and destined to fail-
chorus:
Take away, take away
Take away this ball and chain
I'm lonely and I'm tired
And I can't take any more pain
Take away, take away
Never to return again
Take away, take away
Take away
Take away this ball and chain

addiction _ and step 2 | Reviewer: Chris R | 5/16/13

Recovery's the hardest obstacle any addict will have to go through.. but there is a silver lining. Treat your struggles as a gift, you will become a better person than you ever dreamed by honestly following the steps... my thoughts are with the struggling addict.. keep coming back! (especially if you mess up).. you need never be scared. Much love and hope for you all.

The song is about depression and beging the universe god or whatever to kill you. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/15/13

At least thats what it means to me. in this case the ball and chain represents life specificaly the life of the singer. His life Seems to suck from his POV and he is askign whomever is out there in the universe that is suposed to listen to such things to take his life. The singer seems to be to depressed to take it himself (or to cowardly) As a set, "Story of my Life", "Born to lose" and then "Ball and Chain" tell a very specific story. The story of some one being nostalgic, Realizing that life sucks getting drunk going on a bender then as you are sitting in your crappy place of existance asking god to end it.

RE: Joe from NVA
Good review Joe, however you failed to realize heroin also rhymes with 'shape I'm in'. Gin sounds better though.
Great song with a deep meaning. A good counterpoint to all the meaningless fluff we are bombarded with every day.

It's about the program, the 12 step program | Reviewer: willow | 3/27/11

its about recovery its about as someone said wherever i go there i am. its about the crap we put ourselves into before we surrender and say we can't do it anymore, that a power higher than ourselves can ,will, (and in my case better) relieve me of the bondage of self. Thats what its all about. thanx

Diane doesn't like this song? Is that bitch friggin deaf? Nah, probably just too uptight and ignorant to recognize wicked awesome music if it walked up and broke her nose! We should just put on some Social Distortion, turn it up as loud as it will go and drown her ass out!!!!!!

Rockers with soul | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/24/10

Truly a band with depth, the singer has a voice which intones real feelings, that transends life whether it be his or whom ever this songs speaks to. With the continued bombardment of the airwaves with inconsequential songs I'm thankful for artistic souls who tell a story not just sing a song.

Great Song! | Reviewer: Psycho-Skylar | 9/19/10

Everyone needs to stop fighting about the meaning of the song. It's one of those songs that means something different to everyone, and it doesn't have one meaning. To me it means that whatever you do and wherever you go you're still the same person, and you can't change that. If you run away you'll still be the same person. Eg. If you were addicted to heroin in Toronto, you'll still be addicted to heroin in Halifax, New York, Boston, or wherever the hell else you go. You can't run away from your problems.

Dude this song is one of the best. | Reviewer: Fat Jeff | 4/14/10

Diane, i think you need to listen to more blink 182 and less everything else. Joe my man, you got it right and wrong, how ever who knows who's definition of the song is right. how ever, "ball and chain" is referring to all bad habits anyone has at any point in there life. LOL No, Seriously, your a moron if you dont get the song. its our job to keep punk rock elite, hahaha. peace assholes

RE: Been Done Before! | Reviewer: Joe | 1/17/10

Diane my dear...really? Have you had any experience with the Punk seen? Were you alive in the 80's...if so did you spend time in DC or LA and go to any all ages shows? I am going to guess the answer is NO! If I am wrong, then you apparently missed the messages the meanings and probably the BUS as well. I am sure that you were upset when you discovered that the song was not about a woman. In addition you are incorrect about the booze...while Mike Ness (that's who wrote the song) may actually have had a drinking problem, I believe he might have been referring to his addiction to Heroin. I think he used "gin" in the song because it rhymed with "and look at the mess I'm in".

It is clear to me that you should either do more research than just listening to one song and not understanding it or maybe you should just be quiet and go buy another Def Leppard CD.

I have to agree with TheSkaPunk...One of Social D's best songs, and easily one of the greatest songs I've had the fortune to hear in my life.

common thread | Reviewer: Rob K | 1/12/10

This is a timeless song that can be applied to everyone. Granted it was written about substance addiction but we all have addictions in our past that is our own "ball and chain". Whether it be relationships, work, family, etc. Look past the surface and dig deep into you soul and you too will discover your inner ball and chain.

Take away this ball and chain | Reviewer: TheSkaPunk | 11/7/09

Diane, no offense, but you're a bitch. I think anyone with a fucking brain can figure out what he's trying to say, without you showing your intellectual supremacy and showing how fucking smart you are. Pfeh. Worm.

Anyway. This song's timeless--I've heard it all over the place in my years, and it always seems to ring true with at the very least one person.

For me, it rang true for years. Except, my ball and chain wasn't booze, drugs, or a woman. For me, it was my past. Some things we can't come to terms with, until we close our eyes, stop thinking, and charge right into 'em.

One of Social D's best songs, and easily one of the greatest songs I've had the fortune to hear in my life.

(Rock on, Mike Ness.)

Great Song! | Reviewer: Vic | 3/31/09

This song is awesome. It really captures the sadness and loneliness and hopelessness and despair. I feel exactly as the song describes right this moment and it was great to hear it put into words and song.

Been Done Before! | Reviewer: Diane | 1/27/09

Don't like the song, and the title is misleading, to say the least. You
assume the "Ball & Chain" is a women, an old lady-it's NOT. It's the
empty gin bottle he's got there! LOL No, seriously, the booze addiction
is Social Distortation's 'ball and chain'.
