The lesson of Mesa, Arizona-based Authority Zero is that it can pay off to work--and play--hard. The quartet of singer Jason DeVore, guitarist Bill Marcks, bassist Jeremy Wood and drummer Jim Wilcox played five nights a week in their hometown, flyering non-stop and building a fanbase that would make their 2001 EP the best-selling local CD at Phoenix's legendary Zia Records chain. But local success is only the beginning; this is a band with its sights set on the world, literally. They have broad horizons and eclectic tastes, and they are not afraid to throw whatever international flavors they are digging into the mix. I've had a few chances to meet these guys and they are so nice and cool to hang out with. They grew up in Mesa which is 30 minutes away from where I am and they play most shows in places I can take a bus to. I've spent over 1,000 dollars on these guys and I wouldn't change that for one second.
