Reviews about The Art of a Woman
More than just an Art | Reviewer: Mario James | 10/19/2005
As the title suggest's, to me this album is more than just the 'Art' (or her craft if you will) of a woman as she put it. Obviously upon hearing it yourself you will come to your own conclusions of what it means to you, and if you like I feel touched by some of the subjects taken upon in this album, you may aswell feel as i do.
Upon 1st recognizing her talents on the 2001 film "Save the last Dance" ive become infactuated with her style, vocals, diversity, this is what stands out to me more than alot of albums ive heard over the year's, and which you should pick up too. Songs such as 'you' for example; speaking of a lost but not forgotten love, lyrically well put together, and the musical accompanyment comprizing of stringz and a melodic piano roll, adds to
this atmospherically moving song. A truly great example of live instruments at play without the use of sample's.
Which leads me onto another point, in which the vast majority of this album does contain live instrument's and a distinct absence of the growing trend of sample's and synth's. Though dont be phazed into thinking this puts the album behind in terms of the modern movement, As far as truly Soulful/R&B albums go this is at the pinical, up there with the like's of Lil' Mo and Teedra Moses to name but a few.
There seems to be a little something in this album for every situation, so what ever the mood, this album can 'speak' to you, "in the mood" for those sexy night's in with that special someone, with simple purcusion instrument's and an organ accompniment. Or maybe "art of a woman" which start's out like it could be one of those run of the mill song's of a woman 'whining' about being control'd and un-appreciated, until your shock 00:33 in, where it change's to a more up-beat song outlining ways in which you should respect women in general, making comparisions to your 'mother' without sounding like a feminist. Great song a definate must listen too.
all in all this is a well rounded album put together with the highest standard's i personally have'nt skipped a song on this album which is rare in terms of albums these days, as ive said previously their's something here for everybody and every situation (heartfelt). There are too few female vocalist's who sing/songwrite/part-produce to this calibre (bar Alicia Key's) and to go Platinum too, if you dont know get to know! thats my word on it.
One Artist i do support definatly (buying her album) and if you like R&B/Soulfull singer's then this is a must buy for any serious collection, and wouldnt look misplaced next to your Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston or Diana Ross CD's/LP's.
Athena Cage - Art of a Woman: 10/10
It's more than just the 'Art of a Woman' more so the PASSION of woman!
