At The Bottom Of Everything Lyrics

Review The Song (45)Print the Lyrics
So there was this woman and
she was, uh, on an airplane and
she's flying to meet her fiancé
sailing high above the--the largest ocean
on planet earth and she was seated
next to this man who, you know
she had tried to start conversations
an really--really the only thing
she heard him say was to order his bloody mary
and she's sitting there and she's reading
this really arduous magazine article about a
third world country that she couldn't
even pronounce the--the name of and
she's feeling very bored and very despondent
and--and then, uh, suddenly there's this huge mechanical failure and one of the--the engines gave out
and they started just falling -an- thirty thousand feet
and the pilot's on the microphone and he's saying,
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, Oh My God, I'm Sorry"
and apologizing and she looks at the man and she--and she says,
"Where are we going?" and he looks at her and he says,
"We're going to a party, it--it's a birthday party.
It's your birthday party, happy birthday darling.
We love you very, very, very, very, very, very, very much."
And then, uh, he starts humming this little tune and--and, uh, it kind of goes like this, it's kinda:

One, Two, One, Two, Three, Four
We must talk in every telephone, get eaten off the web
We must rip out all the epilogues from the books we have read
And to the face of every criminal strapped firmly to a chair
We must stare, we must stare, we must stare.

We must take all of the medicines too expensive now to sell
Set fire to the preacher who is promising us hell
And in the ear of every anarchist that sleeps but doesn't dream
We must sing, we must sing, we must sing.

And it'll go like this, alright
While my mother waters plants my father loads his gun.
He says, "Death will give us back to God,
just like the setting sun
is returned to the lonesome ocean."

And then they splashed into the deep blue sea.
(Oh,)It was a wonderful splash.

We must blend into the choir, sing as static with the whole,
We must memorize nine numbers and deny we have a soul,
And to this endless race for property and privilege to be won
We must run, we must run, we must run.

We must hang up in the belfry where the bats in moonlight laugh
We must stare into a crystal ball and only see the past
And (in)to the caverns of tomorrow with just our flashlights and our love
We must plunge, we must plunge, we must plunge.

And then we'll get down there,
way down to the very bottom of everything
and then we'll see it, oh we'll see it, we'll see it, we'll see it.

Oh my morning's coming back
The whole world's waking up
Oh the city bus is swimming past.
I'm happy just because
I found out I am really no one.

I see that someone above is wondering why someone would be happy if they weren't really anyone. I just think he says that b/c it's not important if you are someone in this world(or something important for that matter.) Like, you don't have to become 'someone' to be something in this world. You just have to be you, and live life the way it is handed to you. Just have fun, and be happy =]

nah i think this song is talking about all the things we do now a days like memorizing nine numbers(ur pin number or sumtin)and sell medicine that dosen't even work then there's the hypocracy of church stated here and there and then all you have to do is pay enough attention to every line to know he isn't talking about a birthday party or any of the sort but rather life as we know it here in america.and then when he says i found out i am really noone it's because he's noone in this world hget what i'm sayin??

It's not her birthday lol.

The song highlights the disimportance of living life to expectations.

"I'm happy just because
I found out I am really no one."

is actually one of my favourite ever lyrics lol. To me, its saying 'you know what, living life like we should ISN'T the most important thing in the world. The world is NOT revolving around me, and what i do, in the long shot, doesn't really matter. So i can just live life how i want it and see what happens'

that's what it means to me. I love this song. I can't put the concepts into words though.

amazing lyrics. amazing song.
it's not actually her birthday. the man is protecting her by, instead of instilling inevitable fear that death is nearby, he wants her to feel happy and, for most people, their birthday is a very happy time. i really quite enjoy "oh, my morning's coming back; the whole world's waking up. oh, the city bus is swimming past. i'm happy just because i found out i am really no one."

RE: I am confused | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/22/09

I think that the lyrics, at least those last lines, are trying to portray the expansiveness of the world. "Oh my morning's coming back, the whole world's waking up. The city buses swimming past, I'm happy just because I've found out I am really no one." When you think of the scale of the entire world, you can step back and realize how small you are in comparison. And when you find that smallness you discover you don't have to stress out about the little things or labor over your own life. You can become part of a whole.

Ideas | Reviewer: Arlin | 3/22/09

I don't think it's actually is her birthday. He is saying you are happy on a birthday, so let that same feeling of happiness take over. Also, the "I've found out I am really noone" part, has to do with how- throughout the song- he mentions what we 'must' do to be human ("memorise nine numbers" etc) and in not falling for these he is "noone" in everybody's eyes, but is much freer than them. Thus he is accepting of dying because he is happy and has nothing tying him down.
Just my thoughts.

I am confused. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/14/09

I am confused as far as when he says "I found out I am really no one". I get the whole concept of it being the girl's birthday because they're all about to crash and burn, but it sounds sort of contradicting and naturalistic. How can you be happy you're really no one? Hmm..help?

Rebirth? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/4/09

So, when I listened to the song, I was grappling with the idea of it rather than the lyrics of it. This song isn't about suicide. And it isn't about dying on your birthday. It's about letting a part of yourself die and being reborn.

It's like, you're letting some false self, a self that worries about third world countries you can't pronounce and talking on the phone and worrying about stupid things, crash into the ocean, and instead you plunge into something much greater. It's like you get to see who you really are. You blend into life with everyone and everything else and leave behind the facade of some ego-built self of property and privilege.

It's really an amazing song and his lyrics are amazing. I could be completely wrong. In fact, I very well might be. But it makes sense to me that way. Maybe it does to you too.

People talk in circles. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/11/09

In more or less broken english, it is condescending to try to ask someone to interpret and analyze their taste according to one "musician's" theory. Musician is to genera is to race is to class. Not even the word musician is real or tangible; it is a word to help make learning and categorizing easier.
Furthermore, how can you decolorize your struggle as an artist feeling categorized, by opening your statement by correcting someone by calling Bright Eyes "Indie Rock" (not indee rock).

The internal artist's struggle of being placed in a category or genera, is a self made problem.
