Asilos Magdalena Lyrics - Mars Volta

Review The Song (19)

Enfermo llegué
y para componerme ando de vago
No me des tu obediencia

yo no me quedo

Y ya que caiste de este mundo
cargo una navaja
dios mio para ti
Cuantas veces me mordiste
y cuantas veces yo me fui

yo no me quedo

(X5)
Estrella de la mañana
Samael te persigo a ti
y si me quema sin alas
ademas me muero por ti

Just to clear all the misnomers that run wild on here.........
Ok. Asilos means asylum, shelter, home........NOT heaven or hell or whatever else i read here.
Ahem. Everyone is talking about a MUDDY body wtf is that he clearly clearly clearly says MI CUERPO DE LOBO.......it sounds like a LOVO in fluent spanish and it means WOLFFFFFFFF!!!!!!!!! People need to polish their spanish or qtip them ears.....
Another thing, the ouija board was not a part of this album, it was in bedlam in goliath.

As per all other relations, i agree. There is a mix of kabbalistic knowledge throughout the albums song titles (Tetragrammaton, Day of the Baphomets) and his use of asilos magdalena in regards to nuns, chastitiy, asylums, spiritual anguish is heavy...while the lyrics perfectly describe the various aspects of Samael/The morning star/Satan/the seducer and his descent to this world from above.
It seems to be a dialogue between two people, taken in any possible way.

Echo has it ALLLLLL wrong dont listen to them.....seems like they go online and randomly guess song lyrics cus it sounds like theyre talking about some random love song. anyways. Love peace light. Mars volta bangs your mom on top of amps every damn night.

great song | Reviewer: Cameronieous | 5/20/10

its one of my favorite Mars Volta songs. and weather in english or spanish its beautiful. but not like a rose pretty, but in that morose dark beauity that the Mars Volta has great talent at convaying. i just wish it was a more popular song.

"morning star" is what God called lucifer before he fell. To me this song is about someone who has rejected their catholic faith. Samael is the angel of destruction, and the leader of good AND evil. So what the song is trying to say is that they embrace the power of Satan and are challenging Samael to come and do something about it.

Mmmm | Reviewer: Muka | 9/29/09

I think the "idea" is wrong

Im actually a Mexican guy... if you search on hystori, you'll find Asilos magdalena was an "organization" if we go to The time of Jesus, we will find "Magdalena" a prostitute who changed her ways in order to "follow the Lord"

Magdalena asylums was a place of "catolical help", nuns, priests and fanatics, had the "idea" of sending the "prostitutes" and bad girls to there, they thinked it was some kind of "good place" in wich the womas would change her ways to a better ones...

The truth is indeed, scaring and gross..

In Those asylums, the womans suffered things like raping, abuse, they were treated like niggers between white people.

Here's the "logo"

The woman who has never known remorse of a bad thought - The woman whose virginal uter never crossed the shadows of a sinful thought!! - The woman that breaths purity, inocence and grace, receives the woman whos breath is the pestilent hell

This is mere shit, that thing was pretty bad...

The song is awesome and the lyric is also very very "strong"... but it's only the truth undoubtely...

Im a Catolic guy, dont blame me, the song is awesome in all possible ways and the lyric only reflects the "truth beneat the rose" asilos magdalena was a fucking darning hell.

Cheers

Samael is traditionally the Angel of Death, or an archangel, in western religion, which may yield a slightly different interpretation of the song. "According to Zoharistic cabala, Samael was also mated with Eisheth Zenunim, Na'amah, and Agrat Bat Mahlat - all angels of prostitution." That would probably support the asylum for prostitutes interpretation, which I'm pretty sure is correct or at least something that I'd heard mentioned in relation to this song before. Also, Asilos means Asylums. However, I think there was a good point made about the reference to Morning Star being Satan, which could just be a confusion or some sort of amalgamation of the two dark figures by The Mars Volta.

Here's a bit different translation to aid in the further exploration of the song's meaning:

I arrived in sickness
and to sooth myself
I walk aimlessly.
Do not obey me
because I expose my muddy body to you,
on which the flesh was weak
with a hunger that kept me from singing.

In my life,
the darkness holds me.
When I saw you
in the rain you
promised me your blood;
I will not stay.

Since you already fell from this world,
I carry a knife, my God, for you.
How many times you bit me
and how many times I left.

I am no longer enamored
of your lies.
I sleep in Hell
because Hell is the only truth.

Morning Star,
Samael, I follow you,
and if I remain without wings
I also die for you.

The album that this features on is Amputechture, and therefore not related to the Ouija board. The songs about the Ouija sessions are on The Bedlam In Goliath.

Amputechture is basically a scathing review of organised religion in all it's guises. Inspirations for this album included things that were happening in the news at the time. One such (obscure) event that had been reported that Omar heard about, was the apparent demonic possession of nuns. Thats what this song is about.

Asilos Magdalena, as echo said, can be translated as God's Lover. Thats what nuns are. They are chaste, they don't consort with men, because they are faithful to God.

Wikipedia the album, you will see the mention of the possessed nuns in there.

honestly in my opinion it seems more like a pact between a human and the devil, since Samael is a name for Satan and the Morning Star is another name of Satan so:
Estrella de la mañana
Samael te persigo a ti
y si me quedo sin alas
ademas me muero por ti

He first refers to the morning star then says "Samael I will follow you, and if I'm left without wings, then I will die for you."

but that's just my opinion

Truth | Reviewer: echo | 2/7/09

Asilos Magdalena -
Asilos is translated in to heaven or god, Magdalena is the name of his lover or g/f, so Asilos Magdalena would be like 'Heavenly Magdalena - Heavenly Maggy' He's talking about how he fell in love with Magdalena and when he saw her in the rain she promised him her heart.
And how she becomes this different person how how many times she hurt him and how many times he's left her and how he's not in love with her or her lies anymore and how he'd rather die in hell because hell is the only truth.

He had his heart broken by some chick named Magdalena and by her lying to him, she hurt him so bad to where he wants to be in hell not to be lied to anymore.

love this song, i guess is one of my favourites, it's so dark and energy charged
i'll leave you a translation, keepeng the sense of the song (spanish is my native lenguage)
++translation is not senseless
robotic translations are++

sick i arived
and to cure myself i'm walking around
dont give me your obedience
or i'll show you my mud body
where the skin was weak
with a hunger that dont let me sing

in my life, the dark one supports me
when i saw you in the rain you promissed me your blood

in my life, the dark one supports me
when i saw you in the rain you promissed me your blood
I wont stay here

and now that you felt into this world
i wield a knife, my god, for you
how many times u bite me
and so many times I left

and i'm not in love
with your lies any more
in the hell i sleep
because hell is the only truth

morningstar...
samael, i'm chasing you...
and if i stay without my wings
i will die for you too

´´if you do some research yo will find that omar wrote the lyrics of the album based in stories or phrases that he got in spiritual sessions with a ouija, so the idea of this song being writen for/by a demon is not so senseless (whatever your believes are)

my interpretation | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/8/08

I always thought this song was reffeerring to a vampire. el oscuro me mantiene.means in so many words the darkness holds me. wich could mean that you can't go out during the day and all that promising of blood and the biting and the "samuel persigo a ti" Idk i guess the ridding of prostitution is a more plausible story. your probably right.

Asilo Magdalena | Reviewer: mona | 5/19/08

Actually, this song is about the Magdalen Asylums in Britain and Ireland in the 19th century. They started out as a rescue movement to save women from lives of prostitution. They were run by Roman Catholic churches. That tells you alot there. They evenutally turned into more like prisons, laundries and asylums. These places were filled with sexual, psychological and physical abuse. So instead of being occupied by former prostitutes trying to be rehabilitated, they were filled with any female that was thought to be promiscuous and so on. Its really an eerie story and The Mars Volta portrays that so well, even if you do not understand the language, you can feel the energy of the song and know that something was not right.

Amazing. | Reviewer: Yoyo-jimbo | 4/1/08

Absolutely amazing song. I was raised in Mexico and when I first heard this song I was floored. Cedric is a genius. Honestly, it probably ranks in my top 3 TMV songs ever and is hands down my favorite on Amputechture.

Essentially, it's like something Guillermo Del Toro would write as a backstory for one of his movies. In fact, the story could be stretched out and fleshed into an amazing Spanish takeoff of Constantine (in reverse, I guess?). I would pay good, good money to see that.

Well this song is pretty strange.. It's about a man who turn his back to god becuz he was let down or something.. So he made a pact with Sammael who is "el oscuro or the dark one". Sammael is one of the fallen angels guided by Satan.

*Y ya que caíste de este mundo
cargo una navaja
dios mío
para ti
Cuantas veces me mordiste
y cuantas veces yo me fui

So now u fall into this world,
I wield a knife, my god for you..
How many times u bite me..
and so many times I left.

*Y ya no me estoy enamorado
con tus mentiras
el infierno me duermo
por que el infierno es la única verdad

And Now im not in love
with ur lies (wtf?)
In the hell I sleep
Because Hell is the only Truth.

The lyrics are kinda senseless in some verses because that spanish translation is wrong.
