Aselin Debison Biography
Review The Artist (12)

At the age of 13, Aselin Debison is already a singer who is a part of history. Only five years have passed since Aselin galvanized a coal miners' protest in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. She sang the local anthem, "The Island," with such touching simplicity that thousands of angry striking miners wept, joined hands and sang along. Word of the young singer's dramatic performance and haunting voice spread quickly, and she became a sensation in Nova Scotia and throughout Canada. From the cheering crowds at the 2000 Canada Day celebration in Ottawa to the release of a Christmas recording the next year, Aselin has emerged as perhaps the fastest-rising star in Canadian music. Now with the release of her Sony International recording Aselin has been introduced to an international audience.
With pop luminaries Peter Asher and George Massenburg producing, "Sweet is the Melody", Aselin's Sony debut was recorded in May of 2002 and released internationally in September. Her repertoire includes stirring Celtic tunes that reflect the music of Cape Breton, as well as folk material and a smattering of country and pop sounds. Aselin's own one hour CBC/PBS TV Special was also shot in her home town of Glace Bay and aired several times in the US and Canada.
The daughter of a Cape Breton landscaper and hairdresser, Aselin's first name was inspired by the character of Aslan, the lion in C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia. Aselin has been "enjoying making people happy with my singing" since early in her childhood. Though she has had no formal vocal training, she sang frequently at the age of three while enrolled in the Learning Leprechauns, a private preschool not far from her home in Glace Bay. "I was just one of the girls picked for singing," she told an interviewer. But it was not until a miner's wife called and asked her to sing at the protest rally that people began to hear what was special in Aselin's voice.
"After the miners' rally, when I saw how emotional everyone got when I sang, I thought I might get somewhere with singing," she said last fall in an interview.
With the impact of that performance, the Debison family was flooded with requests for Aselin to sing, requests that her parents have continued to field carefully. There have been many performances since, including in Japan, at Carnegie Hall with Clint Black, Canada Day on Parliament Hill, Boston's Tree Lighting Ceremony, and at Toronto's Roy Thompson Hall for Queen Elizabeth.
Aselin Debison continues to live a normal childhood in Glace Bay with her parents, Donny and Joan, younger brother Blake and dog, Rory. A fan of pop and country music, she is a passionate basketball player, telling one interviewer she dreams of one day winning a college basketball scholarship.
Aselin is currently touring dates in Nova Scotia while working on her new album for Sony.

Double Happiness | Reviewer: Mark Cayen | 3/15/11
Dear Aselin,
My name is Mark Cayen and I work for a company called Olsen Europe. I could go on about what the company is all about but there is only one small part that I want to share with you.
For the past three years we have been working with Plan International, in developing countries, helping women to be self sustainable. Our first year was in a Van Ly a village in Vietnam where we provided the tools and re-taught the women in this village a once age old tradition …embroidery. This allowed the women of Van Ly to stay at home and work while at the same time take care of their own children. Something that we all take for granted. This was the birth of our “Double Happiness” Collection. The women in Van Ly have become self sustainable because of our combined efforts.
The second year we went to the city of Udaipur in India. We worked with an organization called Sadhna. This organization is an initiative to help the women in Rural and Urban areas that are the poorest of the poor. Some of these women have been shunned by their own families with no means to support themselves and their children. Together, Olsen Europe and Plan International helped the women of Sadhna become self sustainable. In much the same way as Van Ly, we provided the tools to help them develop their own business. When we started working with Sadhna they had just over 500 women working in the organization. By the end of 2009 they had 600 women working with Sadhna. One of the great things about Sadhna is that the women don’t work for Sadhna, they are part owners in the company. They get paid for each project that they complete and at the end of the year any profits that are left over, are split between all the 600 women.
Our Third year kept us at Sadhna as there was still much more work to be done to help them become self sustainable on an international stage. Today there are 700 women working at Sadhna. We will be launching our third collection of Double Happiness this year across Canada.
These women are an inspiration for all of us. To bring awareness to this amazing initiative, we want to have a Mob Mash at our launch party in Toronto to Launch Double happiness 2011. the song that i want to use is a song that you ahve sung and it is called Somewhere Over the Rainbow. (at least that is what i think it is called.) this sang truely tells the story of what our intitaitve is all about. As part of this initiative, we are also asking people to share their stories of how women have inspired them to be the person they are today. I would like to share my story with you. Please see below.
A Mother’s Strength
This woman gave birth to her six best friends. In an instant her life changed. She lost the love of her life, her husband, in a car accident when she was 42 years old. Having almost lost her own life in the same accident this woman some how mustered up the strength to not only nurse herself back to good health but also 4 of her children that were also in the car. I’m not talking a couple of weeks or months. This took years.
Despite the challenges she was faced with, she raised her four children that were still at home and watched all her children grow up to be amazing people.
She died on Sept 1, 2008. On her grave stone it says, “She taught us to laugh and we laughed” This is my mother.
I need your help to spread the awareness for this project. Please allow us to use your song for this Mob Mash. If you could please take the time to visit our site at www.doublehappiness.me I would be truly grateful.
Sincerely Yours,
Mark Cayen

Can you advise me as to the Agent/Manager for Aselin Debison. I have located a recording of the song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" by Ms. Debison and wanted to contact the Manager or Agent for the singer to ask about its license use within a documentary film about American Agriculture. China talent show | Reviewer: Elizabeth | 8/10/09
Hi Aselin. My name is Elizabeth and I am 14 years old. My mom bought me the "Sweet is the Melody" CD for me a number of years ago, and I fell in love with it at once. A while later, I found your next CD. Now I have memorized most of your songs because I listen to them so often. I wanted to let you know that I went to China this past June through "People to People Student Ambassadors", and we had a talent show. Most of the kids sang really popular songs, but I sang "Sweet is the Melody". At first, everyone kind of sighed of dissapointment, but after hearing it, everyone cheered not for my singing, but for your song. Many of them asked for your name, and so I told them. Now I believe you have a few more fans. Even though you're now 19 and in college, I think it would be cool if you would email me when you get a chance, knowing that I'm not a desperate fan, but an unknown friend.
With love,
Elizabeth

Aselin debison. Most definately one of my favorite artists! I have both albums and I can't wait for a third. I'm 14 and in Pennsylvania. Not many people know who I'm talking about till I mention "the gift". But I sit and listen I these songs all day long. I learned to play them on my guitar. Definately an idol of mine. The first song I heard was the gift. I was 11 and on my way to Ohio for thanksgiving. They were already playing Christmas music lol. But I wrote down some lyrics and it took me two weeks to find the song. But I got the cd when I found it. And then found the other. I know the lyrics by heart to at least 10 songs on the second album. And all of them on re first. Can't wait for comeback!

The gift | Reviewer: Tonya Sue | 12/29/07
Breath Taking............I don't hear much that I am really taken by these days, but that sweet voice with such a heartful message.....I just couldn't help myself. I had to know where that came from. My best friends daughter had it on her myspace page. When her and her brother came over for the holidays, she pulled it up on the computer and I just stopped washing dishes and listened. WOW, what a sweet voice, reminds me of Alison Krauss. Ever since I wanted to know more.
If what I am reading is true and she is coming to perform in New York, my children and I would love the opportunity to come and listen to her.
