And So It Goes Lyrics - Billy Joel

Review The Song (53)

In every heart there is a room
A sanctuary safe and strong
To heal the wounds from lovers past
Until a new one comes along

I spoke to you in cautious tones
You answered me with no pretense
And still I feel I said too much
My silence is my self defense

And every time I've held a rose
It seems I only felt the thorns
And so it goes, and so it goes
And so will you soon I suppose

But if my silence made you leave
Then that would be my worst mistake
So I will share this room with you
And you can have this heart to break

And this is why my eyes are closed
It's just as well for all I've seen
And so it goes, and so it goes
And you're the only one who knows

So I would choose to be with you
That's if the choice were mine to make
But you can make decisions too
And you can have this heart to break

And so it goes, and so it goes
And you're the only one who knows

Oxford Gargoyles 2013 | Reviewer: Bob Drakefordg | 8/9/13

We heard this song for the first time performed by the Oxford Gargoyles (an unaccompanied, close harmony choir) last week at the Edinburgh Festival 2013. It was the highlight of their performance. We have been thinking about the lyrics ever since. How many songs have had the same effect upon you? It was brilliant!

Agreeing with Kelly's review.....Taking the risk | Reviewer: John | 1/27/13

I have only heard the jazz singer Karrin Allyson's rendition of this song, and it is poignant, to say the least. How often are we willing to risk rejection knowing that taking the risk may be the only way to experience real love, acceptance, and growth.

Appreciative of the tenderness and truth of the lyrics | Reviewer: Rosanne | 1/6/13

Our ensemble, The Celebration Singers chose this as a selection for a spring concert and European tour. It was only then I realized the depth if the lyrics and the music. Billy Joel is one of the most prolific story tellers through his writing, music and delivery of the message.

Yes a beautiful hopeful song. | Reviewer: John | 12/15/12

The years go by and still this song is still beautiful and just like the intensity of the love that he sings about that perhaps will go on forever... Its these small things in life that makes us want to live, like the smile of the girl that you so want to be with and just the feel of her hand touching yours. Without these feelings life is hard and sad. and I know, the girl didnt stay for me. x

The answer is, of course, "Yes." | Reviewer: Rob | 12/13/12

I've just listened to "And So It Goes" several hundred times, on a twelve hour road trip, and I could easily go another twelve hours without getting tired of it. You see, I've been trying to decide something. A woman I've loved a little bit for a very long time now has less than two years to live. For the first time in our lives (we've known each other for 40 years) we have the opportunity to be together, to love each other deeply and completely, as it seems fated we should. And when we do, I'll lose her ("And so it goes, and so it goes/And so will you soon I suppose.") and my heart will be broken forever. I fear I'm not strong enough for this, and think I should walk away now, while I can. But my heart tell me otherwise. Should I give in?

true love always stays | Reviewer: azul | 12/12/12

I heard a choral version and i was struck but when i heard bill joel sing I cried like a baby my boyfriend is in the marines and its so hard to not see his smile or hear his laughter but i know that even though were not togethere he is my true love I had a really bad experience with a past lover and to me listening to this song makes me believe that true love can be painful and has its risks but at the same time beautiful in its own bitterweet way and if its mean to last it will.when he singa And every time I've held a rose
It seems I only felt the thorns
And so it goes, and so it goes
to me it means that distance feels like that because your not able to see the person you love and with him gone i only feel alone and lost without my love

....and so it goes.... | Reviewer: Frank | 8/18/12

When I first heard this song performed I knew in my heart I was listening to something special. As I listened to it I got the feeling that "I know" this song. As soon as I could I Utubed it and it touched me so much as I listened to it again.I then did a lyric search on google and it lead me to this page where I am reading some lovely comments about this song.
This song has me thinking of my late wife who is dead now almost 20 years and whom I loved so much and visa versa.
It also makes me wonder why I never afterwards got into another relationship although I did have a few fleeting attempts but they were never ever very deep. I am wondering now if I held a rose and am still only feeling the thorns? Maybe its time for me to hold a rose again and risk the thorns?

Still can have your heart broken at 70 | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/27/12

This has always been one of my favorite Billy Joel songs. I used the words haunting and sad the first time I heard the song. Now I am beginning a relationship with a beautiful woman. I am 70 and she is 67. Hey, I am not so old that i can t have my heart broken and so I am definitely speaking in cautious tones but I am putting myself out there with her and she can have this heart to break.

Hum... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/5/12

Funny...everyone has their own opinion...but, Joel wrote this song for his girlfriend at the time, Elle Macpherson, knowing that their relationship was not going to last...sounds to me as if it is a sad song specifically because it was about a man who knew the woman he was with was not going to stay and there was nothing he could do but deal with that fact but he wanted to let her know how he felt.

It's love. | Reviewer: Jeff | 5/26/11

Kelly (1/13/11) hit the nail on the head. The crux of the song is the single line: "...and you can have this heart to break." Meaning, "Yes, I've been hurt before, but I'd rather deliberately make myself vulnerable again than live without love in my life."
