An Innocent Man Lyrics - Billy Joel

Review The Song (12)

Some people stay far away from the door
If there's a chance of it opening up
They hear a voice in the hall outside
And hope that it just passes by

Some people live with the fear of a touch
And the anger of having been a fool
They will not listen to anyone
So nobody tells them a lie

I know you're only protecting yourself
I know you're thinking of somebody else
Someone who hurt you
But I'm not above
Making up for the love
You've been denying you could ever feel
I'm not above doing anything
To restore your faith if I can
Some people see through the eyes of the old
Before they ever get a look at the young
I'm only willing to hear you cry
Because I am an innocent man
I am an innocent man
Oh yes I am

Some people say they will never believe
Another promise they hear in the dark
Because they only remember too well
They heard somebody tell them before

Some people sleep all alone every night
Instead of taking a lover to bed
Some people find that it's easier to hate
Than to wait anymore

I know you don't want to hear what I say
I know you're gonna keep turning away
But I've been there and if I can survive
I can keep you alive
I'm not above going through it again
I'm not above being cool for a while
If you're cruel to me I'll understand

Some people run from a possible fight
Some people figure they can never win
And although this is a fight I can lose
The accused is an innocent man
I am an innocent man
Oh yes I am
An innocent man

You know you only hurt yourself out of spite
I guess you'd rather be a martyr tonight
That's your decision
But I'm not below
Anybody I know
If there's a chance of resurrecting a love
I'm not above going back to the start
To find out where the heartache began

Some people hope for a miracle cure
Some people just accept the world as it is
But I'm not willing to lay down and die
Because I am an innocent man

I am an innocent man
Oh yes I am
An innocent man

he's been hurt so bad but im innocent of causing the pain that keeps him from trying again. Sad because when he first held me, as a friend, when i was still with my ex + soo damaged, it felt like i had come home. His 1st text to me was- ur eyes are blue, what color are mine. But, like Billy sang Im not above doing anything. He is so torn at the edges. But so beautiful. I ache for his pain + this song says it all for me.

this song... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/8/11

From what I've been told with connections to Billy Joel himself... is a song is sung to his sister. Being sudical at one point himself.. I'm told by his sister's close friends in the Miller Place area of Long Island this was a song written for and about her. Last I heard, they are still semi estranged.

Brilliant | Reviewer: Christopher | 9/11/10

Even though this song is now over 25 years old, it still resonates with an abundance of truth. When people get hurt in their love lives the damage sometimes carries over into other relationships or potential relationships. It's called "baggage" and Billy Joel has broken it down into details.

This is a classic pop single that people should still be getting something out of 100 years from now.

After all these years... I get it. | Reviewer: Julie | 6/19/10

After listening to this song for nearly 25 years, I actually "heard" the lyrics for the first time. Perhaps because I am that woman and working hard to find my way back. I don't think you can understand these lyrics until you personally relate to them.

It's truly the most beautiful and meaningful song I've ever heard.

A masterpiece | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/14/10

I see that the reviewers of this song talk about the emotional content and meaning of the song. Indeed, that is undoubtedly the most important single perspective for comments. But a song is music and lyrics. In this case, I find the lyrics especially interesting with the use of interior rhymes, such as "go back to the start to find out where the heartache began" or "cool for a while, if you're cruel to me I'll understand". Billy Joel is extremely talented and my criticism of him is that he adopts different styles to the extent that I don't know who he is. "Innocent Man" does not remind me of any one else, and I like to think it is truly Billy Joel. My one small carp about this song is at the end when he says "I'm not willing to lay down and die", the word should be "lie". Perhaps "lay" works better.

The perfect theme song for a man that loves women | Reviewer: Lord Dragon | 7/4/09

I've played this song for three women to get them past being burned by bad men, the first was the mother of my son, the second lived with me until she died, and the third one was last night. Billy got it right.

Malicious Love | Reviewer: Michael | 12/10/08

Sad thing in life indeed. Take someone who's gone through this, a lot of love and self-reflection to write this song (and of course, a lot of music talent). I believe this is the song written for the same woman in "Always a woman to me", and "I love you just the way you are". This woman in the song is tragically trapped in a world of self-justification, blame and spite, doing things emotionally hurtful to herself and her loved ones. I feel sorry for them both. Joel's been on the other side of the door too, and he can sympathize that. And yes, in his past life, someone could have written "An Innocent Woman" or "Always a man to me", though because of society the sufferings will be in a somewhat different form. The dilemma here is that probably this woman will even find the song offensive even though it's written out of love. Will you call this innocent or naive, love or obsession? The other question is how did the woman in this song get into this hurtful mess to start with? Could it be self-justifications, blame and spite, or is it something else? I hope there will be healing for these two poor souls.

Exactly what Im going through right now | Reviewer: A. | 7/24/08

She's been hurt in the past by a couple guys. I'm trying to convince her to love again, since we've had such an immediate connection. Any little thing I do thats wrong though, she latches on to and won't deal with. Its frustrating, but I love this woman and I know she loves me too, we just have some walls to break through.

Amen | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/26/07

This song had touched the heart of thousands of people and will keep on toughing the souls of people who love to hear a song about life and what it really about.

Why does it hurt??? | Reviewer: xanz doe | 9/17/07

Because it's far too true of far too many. Nothing touches like real life - Joel spears us all with this one - we HEAR it because we KNOW it. Hardly a sweet bit of fluff, but a pleading - as all are guilty but at the same time each man is an innocent one.

its about loving and living with courage | Reviewer: Susan | 8/20/07

its true therefore hard hitting.
most people resist love and therefore life.
by extention they also resist engagement with social causes, and choose to take it all lying down!
guess you have to have been in love to realize the true worth of life and thus want to do everything you can to make life a wholesome experience.

Heartbreaking song | Reviewer: Dione | 6/14/07

I find this one of the most heartbreaking songs ever...especially of course perfomed live. I absolutely love these lyrics. If you're in the sort of mood where you can relate to it, it can easily make you weepy. At least I can get that way:)
