Amy Hit the Atmosphere Lyrics - Counting Crows
Review The Song (1)
If I could make it rain today
And wash away this sunny day down to the gutter
I would just to get a change of pace
Things are getting worse, but I feel a lot better
And that's all that really matters to me
Well, Amy hit the atmosphere
Caught herself a rocket ride out of this gutter
And she's never coming back I fear
Anytime it rains she just feels a lot better
And that's all that really matters to me
We've waited so long
For someone to take us back home
It just takes so long
Meanwhile all the days go drifting away
And some of us sink like a stone
Waiting for mothers to come
There has to be a change I'm sure
Today was just a day fading into another
And that can't be what a life is for
And anything she said well she feels a lot better
And that's all that really matters to me
We've waited so long
For someone to take us back home
It just takes so long
Meanwhile all the days go drifting away
And some of us sink like a stone
Waiting for mothers to come
I wanna know, I wanna know,
I wanna know, I wanna know
I wanna know, I wanna know,
I wanna know, I wanna know
And all I really know is I wanna know
And all I really know is I don't wanna know
And all I really know is I wanna know
And all I really know is I don't wanna know [last two lines repeat]
And wash away this sunny day down to the gutter
I would just to get a change of pace
Things are getting worse, but I feel a lot better
And that's all that really matters to me
Well, Amy hit the atmosphere
Caught herself a rocket ride out of this gutter
And she's never coming back I fear

And that's all that really matters to me

Meanwhile all the days go drifting away
And some of us sink like a stone
Waiting for mothers to come
There has to be a change I'm sure
Today was just a day fading into another
And that can't be what a life is for
And anything she said well she feels a lot better
And that's all that really matters to me
We've waited so long
For someone to take us back home
It just takes so long
Meanwhile all the days go drifting away
And some of us sink like a stone
Waiting for mothers to come
I wanna know, I wanna know,
I wanna know, I wanna know
I wanna know, I wanna know,
I wanna know, I wanna know
And all I really know is I wanna know
And all I really know is I don't wanna know
And all I really know is I wanna know
And all I really know is I don't wanna know [last two lines repeat]

Possible Meaning | Reviewer: Matt | 1/30/11
There's most likely a better meaning, but to me it sounds like their life is just fading away because of drugs. I'm not sure if they meant something entirely different, but "hit the atmosphere" and "she's never coming back I fear" sounds like she is in an entire other drug-induced world and will never return to reality. The days drift away and blend together as one because nothing else matters to them but their little world. And they're waiting for someone to take them back home to their mothers, where everything was fine before, because they can't leave on their own. The last lines seem to me to be him debating whether or not he wants to acknowledge how far astray he has become from his life; or if he wants to stay numb to everyone and everything and not have a care for anything or anyone but himself.
