Green Day American Idiot Lyrics

Last updated: 04/11/2012 11:00:00 AM

Don't wanna be an American Idiot
Don't wanna nation under the new media
And can you hear the sound of hysteria?
The subliminal mind fuck America

Welcome to a new kind of tension
All across the alien nation
Where everything isn't meant to be okay
Television dreams of tomorrow
We're not the ones who're meant to follow
For that's enough to argue

Well maybe I'm the faggot america
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda
Now everybody do the propaganda
And sing along in the age of paranoia

Welcome to a new kind of tension
All across the alien nation
Where everything isn't meant to be okay
Television dreams of tomorrow
We're not the ones who're meant to follow
For that's enough to argue

Don't wanna be an American Idiot
One nation controlled by the media
Information age of hysteria
It's calling out to idiot America

Welcome to a new kind of tension
All across the alien nation
Where everything isn't meant to be okay
Television dreams of tomorrow
We're not the ones who're meant to follow
For that's enough to argue

Actually some of you have no idea what ur talking about. This is about how america is conontrolled by government and media, maybe even the illuminati for instance. Its just saying how americans or rednecks are too blind and cant see pas what theyre being used for

GD vs. MCR | Reviewer: SH+ZM 4evr | 3/28/12

My Chemical Romance is going to beat Metalica. Green Day must beat Adam Lambert at all costs. I want to see My Chemical Romance and Green Day face off in the MTV march madness 2012. Go MCR+GD!

Who do you trust? | Reviewer: Nicolai | 2/3/12

So, I've never really been a fan of Green Day. I heard the song (somewhere) and parts of the lyrics caught my attention. I'd previously written Green Day off as 'unserious' and too 'produced' to be worth anything in the grand scheme of things. However, being a popular music band with a relatively long history and substantial success, an argument might be made that I'm wrong. I don't think I was wrong, at least not so far, but I welcome the critique Green Day offers of our media-infected society and its 'subliminal mind control America' (excuse me for using a cleaner language than the original lyrics). I sincerely hope that the critique is authentic and represents the true opinions of the authors, and isn't another cheap trick to gain more profits. I also hope (though my hope is modest) that people listen to the music and hear the lyrics. Maybe it could encourage a little less unconditional acceptance of the medias' portrayals, for the media has become the errand boys of financial and political bastions.

Im changin my name to Blood Bird, cause that describes me more, but any way, i realized i could get guitar tabs on PC, so i printed out TABS for these and a few others. believe it or not, the hardest part is the single note solo.

yeaa | Reviewer: eric | 10/6/10

This song is about all the people in America who let the media dictate what they believe. Having no thought for yourself does in fact make you an idiot. I love Green Day. They are fantastic.
This song rocks.
Im completely right-wing, so I can agree with all these lyrics in a time like this. Blehh. Obama sucks

yet again another retard was given the task of writing lyrics. in the first verse, it is: Don't Want a nation UNDER THE NEW MEDIA. not "that doesn't know media." bunch of effin retards on this site.

Green Day album review | Reviewer: Ink Raven | 5/6/10

This is my review. Green Day is a great punk-rock/alternative rock band. Each of their albums have a theme. Nimrod is like growing up, while Dookie is more of a "live in the moment" type of thing. American Idiot is more of a "look at what we're like." Every song sticks to a theme. and don't forget Green Day fans: "Know Your Enemy"

If any1 wishes to see my comment on poser G.D. fans, go to the "Know Your Enemy" page.

I love the song. Selling out? Please. | Reviewer: Charli | 10/26/09

whether or not "fuck america" music was popular in the early 2000's this song still signifies more. yea, maybe it was their intention to get caught up on the "fuck america" bandwagon but its not selling out. sit back and think about all the ridiculous things that we as americans do because of the media. The media has us like puppets on strings. nobody misses out on that. tell me you dont do a single thing because of the media and i will tell you that you are a lier and prove it. so many things have happened in this country because of the media. Media and violence is a major problem in our country and we allow it to be. If someone wants to write a song about it, all the power to them. maybe if more people would let go of their pride and take a good look around they might realize that infact this song might have been made to latch onto the "fuck america" bandwagon, but what it ends up representing is so much more. this is one of the best songs ever made. i am american through and through. yea this song is a bash at us and yea greenday wouldn't be famous without the media. that in itself makes it even better. it must mean alot to someone who is willing to bite the hand that feeds them in order to get a point across. i'm sick of all the shit being said about this song. it's a great song. The presidents are another story themselves, i'm not a fan of either bush or obama, but neither of them sit there and tell you to turn on your tv and radio. neither of them make you listen. everybody is responsible for their own actions. own up. Best song ever Greenday.

well..... | Reviewer: nobody | 9/5/09

hmm... i dunno... i've read about 3 pages of the review and got confused instead. the first time I hear the song I think that song means that they said to you Americans, not to be an idiot. Why must americans? Of course you all asked that. But I think that' probably because they came from America continents, right? If they were from Asian, maybe it's name is not 'American Idiot' anymore. Instead it's 'Asian Idiot'. ^^; So that doesn't mean they said clearly 'Americans are idiot!' Nah, I think it's more of 'some idiots from America'. But we all know idiots not just come from America, right? That's a few things about what : want to say. Sorry for my bad English anyway. I'm just 13, and what's more, my mother tongue is not English.

Not Punk? Fuck America Bandwagon? Sell Outs, Huh? | Reviewer: Meloria | 7/20/09

Man, some of you people are a trip. I've been listening to punk since '78, and though Green Day is more polished, they are not sellouts. Don't forget many bands recorded their own stuff, because they couldn't get signed. Not that they didn't want to be, no labels would not. Bands became frustrated by this and it came through in the music.

While it's true most of their music is soft by comparison to a lot of stuff out there, it's still punk. American Idiot embodies the "punk" philosophy. Politics and anti-corporate sentiment inspired punk rock.

And, to the person who says there was a Fuck America mainstream bandwagon when this song came out, you are totally full of shit. It took eight excruciating years before I heard the collective pop of the mainstream pulling their heads out of their asses, and began questioning our government, again. In the early 2000s, we were deemed terrorist sympathizers and told to leave if we didn't like what was going on, or if we questioned the Bush Administration.

An european answer to reviewer Joe | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/29/09

Can't believe my eyes what Joe wrote in his review: for him it's okay to learn history from movies and he believes USA join WWII to help Europe. What about Pearl Harbour and the nazis plans to invade USA after Europe was occupied ??!!.... "The USA has been good to its foreign neighbors"- hey Joe are you an employee of the Ministry of foreign affairs??!!

This song is about this kind of people, not about all the americans . All nations have their own rednecks like Joe. About them is this funny song.
