Review The Song (181)Print the Lyrics
Don't wanna be an American idiot.
Don't want a nation under the new media.
And can you hear the sound of hysteria?
The subliminal mindfuck America.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
Well that's enough to argue.

Well maybe I'm the faggot America.
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda.
Now everybody do the propaganda.
And sing along in the age of paranoia.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
Well that's enough to argue.

Don't wanna be an American idiot.
One nation controlled by the media.
Information nation of hysteria.
It's going out to idiot America.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
Well that's enough to argue.

Review about American Idiot

Stupid canadians | Reviewer: Waffle | 7/1/2008
Wait, we're in the gutter? I wouldn't call it that. I'd call it the king of the Hill, if anything at all. And Canada and the US are only comparable in the fact that we share a continent with you. S'about it.

And addicted to music? That cant be bad. Music is just awesome, no other way to describe it. TV, well, even i must agree with that.

Green day rules, they always will and always have. They are the classic of punk and rock. Though this whole politcally based lyrics thing is getting a bit too trendy. IDK.

THE IDIOTS OF AMERICA | Reviewer: Brandon Lemieux | 6/26/2008

hey it's me brandon again. just listen to me. i'd say this song was made by green day because thre trying to express how they feel like the american governmeant is not doing enouph to help the enviremeant. i'd say the ameican idiot is gearge bush. ya i said it. thank god he's getting replaced

THE IDIOTS OF AMERICA | Reviewer: Brandon Lemieux | 6/26/2008

usa isn't a whole contineant. it's usa canada, and i think maybe greenland is in too. but anyways if there is an american idiot it could be canadian. o and mexico too. a mexican might be the american idiot. or maybe people from brazil. it could be from centreal america, north america, or south america. now i'm a 11 year old canadian. and i know more about geography then all of you people. now this is basically politics. so people reply

    boo gearge bush | Reviewer: i'm canadian | 6/26/2008

i have to say this may be related to a very bad american president, gearge bush. but i have to say usa has other flaws. ur not rich. canada isn't s populated as usa. but if we had the same population we still wouldn't be in the gutter like usa. usa is in the guttwe. accept it. canada has less population. and i'm not addicted to t.v and music like americans.

No One Seems To Get This Song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/23/2008

This song isn't saying all American's are idiots.

Don't want to be an American idiot. Ok, yeah, I DON'T want to be an idiot. Someone who trusts this government and then bitches about the state of the Union. Someone who beleives everything they hear on tv or the radio. Someone who protests the freedoms we were all born to have (ie, freedom of speech and religion) because they "feel" it's wrong. That's what this song is about.

It's a poke at the current administration and those who support it.

The song is not a jab at American's in the way that all you are taking it. It's simply saying American's get what they deserve when it comes to politics and this country. We elect them, we must live with them.

uhh well my opinion | Reviewer: MCR FAN! | 5/19/2008

America is pretty idiotic. this song has a point. I live in the dead center of the U.S.A. (Which IS a country btw)Illinois. hmm. The point of this song is.. the point of everyone thinking that America is just this amazing country.. but its not. Nobody really follows the rules. It also points out that everyone is so attached to their t.v.'s and their dvds and all of that. I LOVE GREEN DAY AND I LOVE THIS SONG!!!

    p.s.
"If for one minute you think that youre better than a 16 year old in a Green Day t-shirt, then you are sorely mistaken."-- Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance)

There are so many comments here that no one is ever gonna read to mine, but here goes anyway. I am an American and I can see all the problems in our country easily. The media is all lies, promises of a perfect body or millions of dollars, and many of us live in ignorance about the state of the rest of the world. We also make small changes in our lifestyle like bringing cloth bags to the store instead of getting paper or plastic ones and think we're so environmentally friendly when at the same time we drive huge SUVs and own houses at least five times bigger than we really need. I live in bellevue, and the preteens wear three hundred dollar jeans, because that's what makes them fit in and be popular (among other things.) People buy huge boats and use them on the lake, even though it's rainy on most days. My godmother lives across the lake from a man who owns his own airplane. I hate it. The sad thing is that America is very wealthy, and that should bring us happiness, right? Maybe wealth corrupts just like power does.

    sorry, a bit angry | Reviewer: other | 4/13/2008

Have you not learned anything in your schools there in the USA? America is all the continent, so I can say that I am american too, because I live in Argentina(south America, not Africa! XD)... Try to look beyond you're own ego and you would sure understand lot of issues that you can't because you're too worried thinking that 'cause you're an important industrial countrie (colony of england, sure more clever than you in many things), and that you have "american heroes" that rescued us the poor ignorant rest of the world (lots of movies that I've seen talk about it); as I was saying, because of that, you will never see how the rest of the world look at you.

Carefull! Before you start pulling my leg, I admit that my countrie has maaaaany problems, but I know it! I admit the true because no one can say in the whole world that his/her country is perfect. So surely I have listened lots of songs talking about misery but I took them as clever thoughts that may be good for us.

So please, read a book from europe (they true have good lessons to give to you) or anywhere else but USA, and try to see beyond your own look. Don't be so damm proud of your own ignorance!

Thank you all for reading... bye

Note: I know my english may not be good, but at least I can write something that's not "hello how are you?" while many of you come here to my country and can't say more than "señorita, visa?"
