Almost Home Lyrics - Craig Morgan

Review The Song (7)

He had plastic bags wrapped 'round his shoes
He was covered with the evening news
Had a pair of old wool socks on his hands
The bank sign was flashing 5 below
It was freezing rain and spittin' snow
He was curled up behind some garbage cans
I was afraid that he was dead
I gave him a gentle shake
When he opened up his eyes
I said, "Old man are you ok?"

He said,"I just climbed out of a cottonwood tree
I was runnin' from some honey bees
Drip dryin' in the summer breeze
After jumpin' into Calico creek
I was walkin' down an old dirt road
Past a field of hay that had just been mowed
sponsored links
Man I wish you'd just left me alone
'Cause I was almost home"

He said "I was just comin' round the barn
'Bout the time you grabbed my arm
When I heard Momma holler, "Son hurry up"
I was close enough for my old nose
To smell fresh cobbler on the stove
And I saw daddy loadin' up the truck
Cane poles on the tailgate
Bobbers blowin' in the wind
Since July of '55
That's as close as I've been"

He said,"I just climbed out of a cottonwood tree
I was runnin' from some honey bees
Drip dryin' in the summer breeze
After jumpin' into Calico creek
I was walkin' down an old dirt road
Past a field of hay that had just been mowed
Man I wish you'd just left me alone
'Cause I was almost home"

I said,"Old man you're gonna freeze to death
Let me drive you to the mission"
He said,"Boy if you'd left me alone
Right now I'd be fishin'"

He said,"I just climbed out of a cottonwood tree
I was runnin' from some honey bees
Drip dryin' in the summer breeze
After jumpin' into Calico creek
I was walkin' down an old dirt road
Past a field of hay that had just been mowed
Man I wish you'd just left me alone
'Cause I was almost home"

Man I wish you'd just left me alone
Cause I was almost home (almost home)

Man I wish you'd just left me alone
I was almost home

reach out and touch someone | Reviewer: Justin | 12/22/12

this song is very touching i can listen to this song and tear up everytime cause i can put myself in craigs shoes and i would without a doubt if i saw a homeless man with bags on his shoes and socks on his hands and he was in an alley laying down, i would deffinatly help the guy. as for as close to death as he was to smell and sense his past child hood memmories, man thats so DEEP. ive had sum rough times but never have i wished death would hurry up and take me, to avoid the suffering pain. this is a truly deep song

more to come | Reviewer: aytchpaul | 1/24/11

As our population ages, i think a lot more people will have thoughts like the old man, times be what they are. Remember back when life was good, and today, with how the economy is affecting baby boomers, loss of jobs, homes, life savings, more & more people will be Almost Home.

simply beautiful, and full of meaning | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/10/10

I think this song is truly beautiful, and although I only just got the (probably) intended meaning the other day, I have loved this song for as long as I've known it. I saw Craig in concert yesterday, and his live performance was just as amazing as when the song is on the radio. I get tingles on my arms every time I hear it... well done, Craig Morgan :)

Amazing | Reviewer: Jonah | 1/19/10

I think this song can be taken differently. Shelly's review up there seem like that could easily be what he meant when writing this song. But I think he was writing about a man that had lost everything. He'd lost his family, his financial stability, and his home. Morgan writes that the man actually was close to death at one point, but he awakens him at the last minute. The man wanted to die, just not in the way that suicidal people want to die because he didn't want to kill himself.

UNBELIEVABLE | Reviewer: LISA M PEYTON | 10/30/07

I AM AMAZED AT HOW WONDERFUL AND PROPHETIC SOME LYRICS ARE. THESE ARE BY FAR SOME OF THE BEST I HAVE EVER HAD THE PLEASEURE TO HEAR. THANK YOU CRAIG MORGAN.

A real tear jerker | Reviewer: Shelly | 7/29/07

This song is so beautiful and yet so sad to me because my own dad lives this way due to his schizophrenia and COPD issues. I've heard this song so many times and yet only recently paid real close attention to the lyrics and they just bring tears to my eyes. They say everything I can see and feel in my dad.

Great Writers | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/30/06

I have to admire someone who can take a few words and make such a vivid image. These lyrics are some of the best.
