The Flaming Lips All We Have Is Now Lyrics

Last updated: 04/19/2011 11:00:00 AM

As logic stands you couldn't meet a man
Who's from the future
But logic broke as he appeared he spoke
About the Future
"We're not gonna make it" He explained how
the end will come - you and me were never meant
to be part of the future -
All we have is now -
All we've ever had was now
All we have is now
All we'll ever have is now

I noticed that he had a watch in hand
That looked familiar
He was me - from a dimension torn free
Of the future
"We're not gonna make it" He explained how
the end will come - You and me were never meant
to be part of the future -
All we have is now -
All we've ever had was now
All we have is now
All we'll ever have is now -

All we have is now -

The future | Reviewer: Jon | 4/18/11

What this song means to me is that looking towards the future is not going to make you happy or save your life. All we have is now. Live in the present, or squander your life looking towards a tomorrow that isn't even guaranteed to come.

Imagine a teenage girl, top of her class, plans of being honored and learned and successful. She spends all her time studying and doing extra-curriculars she despises. She's working towards a light at the end of the tunnel, a tunnel she's created for herself for the sole purpose of getting to the light.

Shit happens. Her academic career is over. Now all that effort towards the future was wasted, just like the time she could have spent with her family, time making friends and getting into relationships. Now she hasn't spoken to an immediate kin in years; and without the social skills she should have been building in high school, she's 29, alone, miserable, and hasn't even had a close friend her whole life.

I chose to explain my view on this song through parable. I hope that has made my opinion clear. This is an amazing song, and has been my proof for a while that the flaming lips aren't just whimsical loonies.

I've always been a huge fan of the flaming lips and one day, me and my bf were watching a documentary on Einstein's general/special relativity. suddenly i felt like i understood what this song truly means (to me). the past, present and the future are all already there and all we could really do is to live "now." that's all we have. great song! <3
