Alexander has been called Great through the ages not just because of his tactical and strategic war achievements but because he was the one who ended a long-lasting war between the Greek Kingdoms and Persians and finally took over all of Persia up to the river Tigris. He truly united the Greek Kingdoms for the first time and created Hellas (Graecia in Latin). Trivial info: Alexander means Strong man in ancient Greek.
