He was the son of a king and queen and when he was born, it was prophesized that he would kill his father and marry his mother as an adult. His parents, scared by this prediction, had a servant take the baby out to the feilds to kill him and prevent that from happening. The servant took pity on the child and gave him to a couple who lived in the next town. They raised him as their own, but as an adult, he heard of this prophesy and left home. As he crossed the bridge into (unbeknownst to him) his birth town, he killed a man riding in a carriage. That man was his biological father. Unaware of this, he continued into town and wooed the queen (his biological mother), and they were married. They had three daughters together. I don't remember how, it's been a while since I read this book, but Oedipus finds out that his wife is, in fact, his mother.
