You walk down Alameda shuffling your deck of trick cards over everyone
Like some precious only son
Face down, bow to the champion
You walk down Alameda looking at the cracks in the sidewalk, thinking about your friends
How you maintain all them in a constant set of suspense
For your own protection, over their affection
Nobody broke your heart
You broke your own 'cos you can't finish what you start
Walk down Alameda brushing off the nightmares you wish could plague me when I'm awake
So now you see your first mistake was thinking that you could relate
For one or two minutes she liked you
But the fix is in
You're all pretension, I never pay attention
Nobody broke your heart
You broke your own 'cos you can't finish what you start
Nobody broke your heart
You broke your own 'cos you can't finish what you start
Nobody broke your heart
You broke your own 'cos you can't finish what you start
Nobody broke your heart
If you're alone, it must be you that wants to be apart

one of many greats by elliott smith. i think, or actually im pretty sure, he's reffering to alameda st right here in LA. it's the same street union station is on. it totally goes well, too. picture a filty, dusty street that smells like piss and is infested with homeless people that wander around like zombies all night. yellow streetlights, trash everywhere. the mood of the song goes perfectly with the ambience on alameda st.
alameda, nobody broke your heart... | Reviewer: chad | 7/10/07
This song, to put it quite ineloquently, is the shit. One of Elliott's most beautiful. Are you keeping an ear out for those harmonies Elliott's singing behind his lyrics? You should be; they're heartbreaking. And don’t even get me started on the lyrics. You're all pretension/I never pay attention is a fav, as is Nobody broke your heart/you broke your own cuz you can’t finish what you start. How true.
