Afterlife Lyrics - Avenged Sevenfold

Review The Song (79)

Like walking into a dream, so unlike what you've seen
so unsure but it seems, ’cause we’ve been waiting for you
Fallen into this place, just giving you a small taste
of your afterlife here so stay, you'll be back here soon anyway

I see a distant light, but girl this can't be right
Such a surreal place to see so how did this come to be
Arrived too early

And when I think of all the places I just don't belong
I've come to grips with life and realize this is going too far

I don't belong here, we gotta move on dear escape from this afterlife
’Cause this time I'm right to move on and on, far away from here

A place of hope and no pain, perfect skies with no rain
Can leave this place but refrain, ’cause we've been waiting for you
Fallen into this place, just giving you a small taste
of your afterlife here so stay, you'll be back here soon anyway

This peace on earth's not right (with my back against the wall)

No pain or sign of time (I’m much too young to fall)
So out of place don't wanna stay, I feel wrong and that's my sign
I've made up my mind

Gave me your hand but realize I just wanna say goodbye
Please understand I have to leave and carry on my own life

I don't belong here, I gotta move on dear escape from this afterlife
’Cause this time I'm right to move on and on, far away from here
Got nothing against you and surely I'll miss you
This place full of peace and light, and I’d hope you might
take me back inside when the time is right

Loved ones back home all crying ’cause they're already missing me
I pray by the grace of God that there's somebody listening
Give me a chance to be that person I wanna be
(I am unbroken; I’m choking on this ecstasy)
Oh Lord I'll try so hard but you gotta let go of me
(Unbreak me, unchain me, I need another chance to live)

(Fast Guitar Solo)
(Screaming)
(Laughing)

I don't belong here, I gotta move on dear escape from this afterlife
’Cause this time I'm right to move on and on, far away from here
Got nothing against you and surely I'll miss you
This place full of peace and light, and I’d hope you might
take me back inside when the time is right

This song isn't about a bitch or drug addiction. It's about a person who has found themselves in the afterlife and is not ready yet. Hence why the name of the song is called afterlife. Go watch a near death experience video and every person explains the same emotions felt in this song...

"I am choking on this ecstasy" | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/5/11

if your a christian and you believe in heaven and hell then you would realize its about a man that dies way to early and fights to go back to finish what he neede to do when The Rev say "I am choking on this ecstasy" i think he means that everything in heaven is too good and he doesnt want that YET in my mind all the following lyrics describe heaven

Like walking into a dream, so unlike what you've seen

Such a surreal place to see

A place of hope and no pain, perfect skies with no rain

This peace on earth's not right (Earth being the place hes in at that time)

No pain or sign of time

This place full of peace and light

Loved ones back home all crying ’cause they're already missing me (speaking about the people that are upset by his passing)

also the line , and I’d hope you might
take me back inside when the time is right is talking about him asking god to take him back into heaven after hes fulfilled his duties on earth

this is just my view on it

Afterlife meaning | Reviewer: awesome song, awesome meaning | 4/12/11

The song Afterlife, the fourth track on the new album, was written again by The Rev. Afterlife incorporates a ‘poppy’ element, which in turn makes it one of the catchiest songs on the album. Zacky explains the song is about “a person, who finds themselves in the afterlife, realizes they have too much stuff left on Earth to do. And to go back and make it right, they have to escape from their afterlife, so they can go back and make amends with the people they love and care about.” M. Shadows also adds: “That’s kind of the hell of dying too early… in this instance, it looks like the person is gonna get a second shot.”

Not about the revs death | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/11/11

This song (to me, at least) is about leaving people in your life behind and following your dreams, doing what you want to do, and becoming the person you want to be. "I don't belong here/weve gotta move on" the Rev is talking about not fitting in (maybe the place where he grew up? His family?) and finding himself through music (starting a7x). The afterlife that is described is the life of a musician. But you can tell that Jimmy is still thinking about what he left behind.
This is NOT about the rev's death. This song came out years before that, although it is strange how he seemed to predict his death during the writing of the Nightmare album.

Meaning | Reviewer: Miza | 2/9/11

This song is about fear of cimmitment, basically. It's obviously being sung to a girl, because, well, it says so. It's not being sung to God or to himself or anyone else. He has to let go of her because things with her are too perfect. He's not ready for the prefect life yet - he needs to get out and live first. No alarms and no surprises? Nope, that's not for him... yet. This song is a plea for understanding and a request that she will forgive him and take him back when the time is right.

I think it's great that people can listen to a song and feel that it speaks to them personally, and I love listening to certain songs when I am in certain moods. If there are people who inspired to stay off drugs by this song, I certainly don't want to take that away from them... but drugs aren't what this song is about. At least, not in the way some have interpreted it. In fact, he may be running away to the drugs, not from them.

HEART PROBLEMS WITH A DRUMMER ????? lol | Reviewer: Some reason and sense of beauti | 1/12/11

can you even hear the dump anonymous 9/3/10 ???
A drummer with heart problems!!! the most rare thing ever
If he had heart problems (as he's saying ) he should've died long ago because heart muscle fermintation reaction

Plz dn't spell my words wrong .The rev and danny carey(Tool drummer) are the best ever and avenged sevenfold the best band ever but rlly..... The rev's death wasn't this way and I don't think it's a suicide too .....God knows

y'all need to listen to this song n pay attention to the band is trying to say | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/10/11

This song means that he died to soon by having a drug overdose "I am unbroken; Iam choking on this ecstacy" and he is tryiing to bed god to let him out so he could finsh wat he had to do but god didnt let him so now he sees that his whole family is crying n mourning over his death n he wants somebody to listen to what he has to say "Loved ones back home all crying cause they're already missing me, I pray by the grace of god that thereis somebody listening"

My view | Reviewer: Burntfur | 1/2/11

I am a new Avenged Sevenfold fan, so I have no clue what the previous comments are talking about when it comes to Rev. What I'm picking up from this song, is the man and woman in the song have died or had a near death experiance because of an overdose of some sort and want to escape their Afterlife or quit the drugs.

You're all wrong | Reviewer: JackJ10 | 1/1/11

This song isn't about drugs or a relationship or anything like that. It's about dying too soon, and going to the next life without finishing the work you felt you still had to do on Earth, and lines such as "Oh Lord I'll try so hard but you gotta let go of me" explain it perfectly, as does "Escape from this afterlife" and "They're already missin me".

thank you so much <3 | Reviewer: mEssed53 | 10/4/10

This song really speaks to me. I recently spent time in the hospital due to a suicide attempt and other depression related struggles, and now that i'm out and i went through the intensive out-patient recovery, i feel as if i am coming out of a dark place that in a way sheltered me from the real world. There was no sign of time and i felt like i knew that i needed to break out of the darkness and live my life. On the way, I've had to let go of ones that i love because i knew that it was the only way to recover. thank you avenged sevenfold. this song saved my life.

Not about the rev | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/3/10

People there is no way this is about the rev! He wrote it but the album came out like 2 years before he died....he's an amazing drummer... He can't tell the future. If he could then he wouldn't be dead because he would have known not to mix alcohol with his heart medicine( which he probably did but didn't think he would die) and don't tell me a different story of how he died...that's what happened. He had heart problems. We miss you Jimmy foREVer and always.

Great song, powerful meaning | Reviewer: Older Than U Think | 9/3/10

This song is about someone who is addicted to drugs. He is in a relationship with a woman who has a serious addiction, and he becomes addicted as well. They are both strung out all the time...not facing reality. Under the influence, you feel no pain, so it is like Heaven/the "afterlife". He has now taken his habit too far, overdosed and loses consciousness for a bit, (or could have been been in a coma or declared deceased but then brought back to life by CPR.) This near-death experience causes him to "wake up" from the drug-induced dream and face reality. He realizes he has too much to live for and needs to break away from her if he is going to make it. He still loves her, but he needs to take care of his needs if he wants to avoid dying at a young age. He now has a second chance...many people heavily addicted to drugs do not.

Just my take on it.

Thank You!! | Reviewer: Flamingdawn~ | 8/6/10

Afterlife by Avenged Sevenfold is what got me into rock/alternative/punk music. I was in the car with my sister when this song played on the radio. I immediately loved it. It's still my favorite song to this day. A7 got me into other bands, too. Nirvana, Green Day, The Offspring, Disturbed, Tool, Linkin Park.... An endless list. All I have to say is, THANK YOU, AVENGED SEVENFOLD!!!
