Across The Universe Lyrics - The Beatles

Review The Song (44)

Words are flowing out like
Endless rain into a paper cup
They slither wildly as they slip away across the universe.
Pools of sorrow waves of joy
Are drifting through my opened mind
Possessing and caressing me.

Jai Guru Deva. Om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Images of broken light, which
Dance before me like a million eyes,
They call me on and on across the universe.
Thoughts meander like a
Restless wind inside a letter box
They tumble blindly as they make their way across the universe.

Jai Guru Deva. Om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Sounds of laughter, shades of life
Are ringing through my opened ears
Inciting and inviting me.
Limitless undying love, which
Shines around me like a million suns,
It calls me on and on across the universe

Jai Guru Deva.
Jai Guru Deva.
Jai Guru Deva.
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

You're Cool | Reviewer: Silvia | 5/11/13

11 year old anonymous- I think you're a great person. Keep up on your goal of teaching your friends spirituality and stuff like that. Oh, and, Fred Redneck, I was 11 when I first heard this song as well. I instantly fell in love with it, and listen to it constantly. I'm 13 now. It's a great song, and really can be enjoyed by almost any age group.

Flashback to deja vu all over again again | Reviewer: Fred Redneck | 1/24/13

Wow, I am amazed an 11-year-old is now enjoying this song, but why not? I was only 16 when it was issued and I instantly loved it and still do. AND I have now learned to appreciate MY parents' music (swing, big band, etc.) A quibble: is "zenned" now a word? And some of the fans may be confusing Buddhism and Hinduism. But that doesn't detract from the beauty of the song and its message: love is peace eternal

Slight corrections to these lyrics | Reviewer: Proud Primate | 4/8/12

Listen closely and you hear that the second line is:
"They slither wildly as they slip away across the universe"

the adverb "wildly" being exactly parallel to the second line in the following verse,
"They tumble blindly as they make their way"

Also, the last two lines (except the chorus) should be
"Limitless undying Love which shines around me like a
million suns, it calls me on and on"

"it" rather than "and", referring to "Limitless undying Love", making the reference rather personal

Thank you, John Lennon! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/2/12

This song is excellent! It makes me realize the importance of accepting responsibility for my own actions and for setting up my future. It also invokes a feeling of praising God for His Greatness.
Thank you for your wisdom, John Lennon!

You need far more information, BEATLE Fans. | Reviewer: Vito | 11/19/11

If you want more insight into the best rock group ever please watch the new
movie by Martin Scorsese called: George Harrison-Living in the Material World. It is on HBO. I have been waiting for ever for a great movie about the
Beatles. This movie is the best and has input from Paul, George and Ringo.
There was a Beatle named Stuart who died early & of course the 1st drummer was Pete Best. It went like this. John found Paul who found George who found Ringo.
This film has rare footage from the start of the group until the breakup. It is 3&1/2 hours long. Best movie I have seen in a long time.
George was the glue that made the songs great. John & Paul would write the
songs. They would come in and George & Ringo would not even know them until
they brought them into the studio. George & Ringo were so good that they would learn them quickly. Paul & John couldn't play guitar very well. It was George who made those songs work. He was 1 of the best guitar player who ever lived(esp. slide guitar).
They got into the Yogi stuff and this song as others have a mantra in it.
After George's 1st record "All Things Must Pass", one discovers that George
was a great song writer. He had been writing songs from the early 60s, but could only get 1 or 2 songs on an LP. He was an innovator(Eric Clapton's words)and used Mantras in several songs. MY Sweet Lord has a mantra which makes the song hypnotic. A Mantra is 1 to 4 word or group of words that contain a syllable that contains a vibration within it. It is repeated over and over in meditation to get to a state of mind in which you get closer to God. Watching this movie has changed my life. I am a troubled soul who like George was raised a Catholic and want some answers about spiritualism. I am
trying to find my own Manta & try Meditation.
George wrote great songs. The Taxman, While My Guitar Gently Weeps(White Album). Something, Here Comes the Sun. There are too many to name. Buy a couple of his CDs and learn. He was the most successful of the Fab 4. He had the most #1 songs and Records of their single's careers and the most recent #1-----He had Ravi Shankar as someone who not only taught him the Sitar, but taught him spiritual things. Ravi says Music is God. It is the only way to communicate with God. Speeches & words do not do that.
Watch this movie. It is a treasure. Paul was the 1 Beatle who made the other 3 work, thank God. Ringo said that many of the records would never have been made without Paul. Paul has a great story about Sgt. Pepper and it's idea of beings made. He came up with the idea that they would use Sgt. Pepper as a persona ie. another band & that would free them to do anything they wanted. George wrote Within You, Without You and introduced the sitar.
George tells how he got his Mantra and the Maharishi Yogi explains it too.
This movie is valuable and could change your life. John explains how to meditate as does George during an interview with David Frost.
I will stop now with this. It is said by many famous people that George had an aura around him. People would want to be with George because he made them feel great. He gave these friends their "feel good fix". This is the only movie I know of that has input and comments from all 4 Beatle's.Plus both of George's wives. Eric Clapton took George's 1st wife Patti away from him and they remained best friends. Clapton plays without credit on many of George's records. This shows that George got the big picture. We are all just specks in this universe. We all need to learn and prepare ourselves for the next life. Enjoy your spiritual journey and look for the Mantras in the Beatle records and esp. George's songs. These mantra
make the songs hypnotic. Great movie and even shows the breakup of the Group. A must see. Ringo and George were close. This movie is an awakening for me. Enjoy and watch it many times. It is a movie that educates...

Reply to Victory to God | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/3/11

Jai guru deva, OM in no way can mean Victory to God, Lennon was a person who used to practice meditation (Buddhism) so he didn't reduced his mind to god, I respect everyone believes, but if you take the time to learn more about other religions such as Buddhism you'll really understand what he really meant. The title says it all, Across the Universe, not Accross God.

As with all songs that are not a simple narrative, they are open to interpretation. A far wiser man than me said Talking about music is like dancing to architecture. Take what enjoyment you can from a song and leave a bit for the rest of us.

Memories | Reviewer: Lore | 6/11/11

When I was in second grade, I had this incredible teacher. Mr Park, his name was. It was his first year teaching a class alone. He absolutely loved The Beatles. He would sing us their songs as he played his guitar. Mr Park always made the class fun and pretty much made me want to go to class. At the end of the school year, he gave each of us a CD of Beatle songs. I vividly remember this being one of the songs on there. I remember always listening to it. I'm tearing up as I write this, not from sadness, but from happiness that some how got away from me. Then I moved away from the school; Away from the town, I forgot about The Beatles and Mr Park and the happiness it all brought me. I was in a darker place. I still kinda am. But, the important thing is that I've rediscovered The Beatles and I've rediscovered the specific feeling they give me when I listen to them. There's still hope.

To interpret these lyrics is to learn the ways of life. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/30/11

I am the same person who put the insanely long review on you've got to hide your love away and the one on norwegian wood, which for some reason is in a different language. I'm 11 and I sometimes teach my friends to be zenned. That 70's show helps, when hide is teaching jackie, but the first lesson is always to interpret these lyrics. They are so deep and meaningful, they really can teach you a lot. I love this song!

I me mind | Reviewer: another beatles fan | 5/24/11

the song is a bit acid but thats exatly what I like. My favorites are: this one, dear prudence, lucy in the sky, the end, i am the walrus, the fool on the hill, strawberry fields, hello goodbye and come together. I must say that this is really strange but this song is somehow meaningless to me and still it makes melt of happiness. It keeps my mind in an lava-ice-cube state, for better understanding:
1st:imagine yourself floating at space.
2nd: sing, hear and relax.
3rd: feel your mind.

My fav verse | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/20/09

Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes,
They call me on and on across the universe,
Thoughts meander like a restless wind inside a letter box
They tumble blindly as they make their way..

I love how in this verse the idea of linght and wind is put together so perfectly in the last line "tumble blindly" it's just so perfectly said

our wedding song!!! | Reviewer: Krista* bonbon | 11/1/09

Everytime I hear this song I smile! Reminds me of a very special day on the beach.(Back to the "Anti-bad trip" comment; we had that connection with across the universe too.)What is a better way of discribing that moment after you are first husband and wife as "OM"...I has captured a moment in time for me!

Jai Guru Deva, Om | Reviewer: ElectricDaisies | 8/23/09

Jai Guru Deva means "Victory to God"
and "Om" is a word used when meditation but it emcompasses the spiritual world, its representative of earth, nature, the sun, and being one with the universe.
The song was made to be an ideal "trip" song. Its like, if you do LSD (Acid) you're supposed to become closer to the mysteries of the universe and this song makes that easy it opens up your brain and gets it going to help you think of the possibilities, while keeping you at ease. Its very representative of The Beatles and what they represented. Just think of this as the "Anti Bad Trip".

I love it... | Reviewer: ivan | 8/18/09

I love this song. It relaxes me everytime i listen to it. oh yeah, for those people who doesn't understand the phrase jai guru deva, it means "victory to God divine". "om" is the sound the monks make when they meditate.

Does it matter? | Reviewer: Rubber soul | 8/15/09

Why does it matter what "Jai Guru Deva OM" Means anyways? they are fantastic beautiful lyrics by themselves. Its a mystery to what he REALLY meant by them because maybe he wasnt thinking about GOD while he wrote this song. Who knows? But thats why i like it, its a mystery that cant be solved.
