Across The Lines Lyrics - Tracy Chapman

Review The Song (4)

Across the lines
Who would dare to go
Under the bridge
Over the tracks
That separates whites from blacks

Choose sides
run for your lifes
Tonight the riots begin
On the back streets of america
They kill the dream of america

Little black girl gets assaulted
Ain’t no reason why
Newspaper prints the story
And racist tempers fly
Next day it starts a riot
Knives and guns are drawn
Two black boys get killed
One white boy goes blind

Across the lines
Who would dare to go
Under the bridge
Over the tracks
That separates whites from blacks

Choose sides
run for your lifes
Tonight the riots begin
On the back streets of america
They kill the dream of america

Little black girl gets assaulted
Don’t no one know her name
Lots of people hurt and angry
She’s the one to blame

Across the lines
Who would dare to go
Under the bridge
Over the tracks
That separates whites from blacks

Choose sides
run for your lifes
Tonight the riots begin
On the back streets of america
They kill the dream of america

Great Lyrics! ... Pretty much of the same today ain't it? Tracy Chapman I love you! Is it a coincidence that we carry the same birthday? Every song on your album is phenomenal! I could listen to you 24/7. My most favorite though is "Mountain O' Things". When is your next U.S. concert? Can't wait.

TC you rock!!

Track number three on her self titled album that sold over ten million copies worldwide, It became the number one album on Billboard's Pop Album Charts. The song captures her vocal abilities and mixes it with her talent with the guitar in one big cocktail shaker and pours it on you like a trip to Niagara Falls. Tells the story of a fight between both black and white with casualties on both sides but the blacks are blamed because of racism. This has not been confirmed by the artist but it seems very logical. Brilliant artist and brilliant song. - Ethan G.

Pretty much amazing! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/31/08

This song is a good narrative of the divisions in the United States as she states, "kill the dream of America." In Tracy Chapman style, it's a beautiful melody and simply stated meaningful lyrics.
