The Smiths ASLEEP Lyrics

Last updated: 08/16/2014 05:56:05 AM

Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
I'm tired and I
I want to go to bed

Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
And then leave me alone
Don't try to wake me in the morning
'Cause I will be gone
Don't feel bad for me
I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I will feel so glad to go

Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
I don't want to wake up
On my own anymore

Sing to me
Sing to me
I don't want to wake up
On my own anymore

Don't feel bad for me
I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I really want to go

There is another world
There is a better world
Well, there must be
Well, there must be
Well, there must be
Well, there must be
Well...

Bye bye
Bye bye
Bye...

I read the book and listened to Asleep when it was first mentioned around the beginning and listened to it whilst finishing the rest of the book (It really emphasised the tone of the book). Beautiful song. So glad I found it. It makes me happy and sad at the same time. I don't know why. I'd actually like something like this to be played at my funeral or something.

fav song | Reviewer: Zeta Morrissey | 6/28/14

Actually is not a suicide song...its about death.Morrissey himself said that he is against suicide!the song says that he wants to sleep and die not kill himselm...he wants a beautiful and peaceful death...

This is what it means | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/9/13

This song is about depression, suicide, loneliness and a longing to die.

Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
I'm tired and I
I want to go to bed
(Tired of feeling depressed and wants to die)

Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
And then leave me alone
Don't try to wake me in the morning
'Cause I will be gone
(He'll already be dead by morning, so there would be no point in trying to wake him)

Don't feel bad for me
I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I will feel so glad to go
(He doesnt want his loved ones to grieve his death, because his life was so terrible it is a relief to die)

Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
I don't want to wake up
On my own anymore
(He cant stand waking up having no lover to be there for him)

Sing to me
Sing to me
I don't want to wake up
On my own anymore

Don't feel bad for me
I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I really want to go
(Dont feel bad, its a relief for him to die)

There is another world
There is a better world
Well, there must be
Well, there must be
Well, there must be
Well, there must be
Well...
(No matter what happens when he dies, it must be better than his life)

Bye bye
Bye bye
Bye...

My dad introduced me to this song when o was very young, im now 14 so still young but the song reminds me all the hardships of so many people. The song reminds me of an extremely close friend of my family who died a few years back but by the time he died he was actually pleased, he was just so ready to die. Perks really used this song in a great way and im so happy so many more people are listening to this heart warming song which tells such a sad story, the want to die.

Lovely | Reviewer: Debbie | 5/13/13

Like many people, I found this song through Perks. No, I did not know of it when I was young or something, I'm 13. But I love it anyway. And I think it's beautiful that great music, in any day or age, can touch someone's heart and stay with them forever. And I agree, I feel like it has more of an 'accepting death' feel to it rather than suicidal. Whatever it truly means, this song has touched my heart in ways that most songs I hear don't. I hope people keep listening to it.

Timeless Art | Reviewer: Anon, A Mouse! | 3/9/13

Louder Than Bombs was a huge part of the soundtrack of my youth (a long time ago). My 15 y/o niece recently introduced me to The Perks, and I loved it for the same reason I first fell in love with the Smiths oh so long ago--because it speaks eloquently of the alienation and loneliness that plague young people during the so-called best days of their lives. Listening to the Smiths, I had a sense that someone understood, and was not merely trying to sugarcoat and sanitize the perils of youth. I am glad The Perks is doing that for another generation, now. I'm also glad it's helping people find some great music. Art does save lives!

Does nobody see? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/24/13

So, please, let me make something clear. There might be People that found the song in a book. I read the book and it was beautiful. People that read it, too, but didn't see how moving and wonderful this book was, aren't worth to know it. Cause, it was breathtaking. It wasn't childish or anything like this. And I have to say, I love the book.

And I love the song, too. Did nobody notice that Charlie loved this song as well? He loved it much enough to put in on a mix tape he made for his best friend, and the song was on the mix tape TWICE.

So, to finish this, both book and song are brilliant. I can't understand why some People here really need to insult the ones who love the book as much as I do. Or who love the song as much as I do.

Agreeing with hattfatt | Reviewer: RueHinton | 12/7/12

I don't particularly think that it has to be about suicide, just dying generally. I think it seems like the person has seen it coming for a while and doesn't particularly want to die, but isn't afraid of it happening either, maybe thinks that maybe it'd be better to just be finished.

I think this song helped a lot of us, do i think that was the intention when this song was written? No! does it mater? Yes! But only for us who are alive to hear it. When we go all that we know will go with us, and all that we will be is gone, and what is left is fore who ever hears this song again to make their minds up about what it means.

I don't understand the people that have this need to put down those who heard the song IMF a different way or different time. OoooOOooOooh so you heard it When it just came out or when you were 5. So what. And how did you hear about it? You didn't just wake up one day and know it . Maybe a frown told you about it or a relative or you hear it on the radio. Just take it as a compliment that you like a song that will survive multiple generations. People learn of music various ways and one isn't Bette than the other that's retarded. Anyways the song can be interpreted in a lot of ways. I think they did that on purpose . Most smart artists do so that its relatable to many. But to me it sounds like depression or wanting to die.

I feel terrible that you are hurting. I have hurt like you've described here. No one knows what to say. Nothing anyone can do to make you feel better. Sometimes I have felt like just falling and melting into the ground. I hope you are okay. There is a lot of hurt in the world and I am always amazed to see how people hurt each other. I know this, tho, that this is how it is supposed to be. Ask Jesus to help your broken heart. I hope you are okay. Warmest heart, Vanessa.

I found this book through perks. Perks saved my life, you know. I was pretty fucked up & this book stopped me from hurting myself. This book helped me find this song, which made me happy. I keep reading all these wars about this song & the book. I hope you enjoy the song, listen to the music, regardless of your opinion of it & regardless of where you found it. Music & books save lives.

Love always,

So Tired | Reviewer: Mike Vargas | 1/8/12

Where do I begin? My interpretation of the song is that living in this painful world, wirh all the hurt and sorrow most hold in, can be perfectly described as just a complete tiredness, or fatigue. The pain is simply too much to bear. And passing into Heaven, that must feel like its described, as an Eternal rest. I greatly wish that tonight I could be sung to sleep, and never wake again.
