9 Crimes Lyrics - Damien Rice

Review The Song (39)

Leave me out with the waste
This is not what I'd do
It's the wrong kind of place
To be thinking of you
It's the wrong time
For somebody new
It's a small crime
And I've got no excuse

Is that alright?
Give my gun away when it's loaded
Is that alright?
If you don't shoot it how am I supposed to hold it
Is that alright?
Give my gun away when it's loaded
Is that alright
With you?

all wrong | Reviewer: andre | 12/18/10

i think the song is not very romantic at all. i think it is about something every man can relate to.
it is about a man who doesn't get anymore sex in his relationship, at least to little for his liking.
and now he is questioning whether it is allright to have sex outdoors to satisfy his needs. the loaded gun is to be taken literally.

Love this Song | Reviewer: B's Girl | 8/23/10

I love this song so much. I feel its about two people that are in love with each other but cant be together because they are with other people and torn between love . They know its wrong to have such deep feelings for on another but cant help it. its not really cheating but they wish they would have a sign that its alright to love when they know its not

Gun=heart. | Reviewer: been there | 7/24/10

The gun is a metaphor for heart. They both once dated each other, but now they are with different people. They still continue to have feelings for each other, even though they are now in two different relationships. The "small crime" is them lying to themselves and who they are now with about their true feelings. They are still very much in love with one another, but they can't seem to let each other go. He never actually cheated on her, but he feels that way because he is still in love with her while he is with someone new. "Give my gun away when it's loaded" means "give my heart away when I'm still in love with you." In other words: Is it alright that I give my heart to someone else when I still love you? No. It's not.

Lovely Song | Reviewer: Jen | 6/20/10

This song is absolutely amazing! When I first heard it, I was so taken aback with the beauty of it that I had to spend the next hour listening to it again and again. One of the saddest and most tragic songs I have ever heard, even sadder than Cheers Darling, and Lord knows that song broke my heart to pieces...

Its not over | Reviewer: Marc | 6/11/10

There is a misconception that he is cheating on her. I believe that they have broken their relatinship and both are questioning if it is truly over. She says "its the wrong time for somebody new" and he says he is cheating because he believes that is what he does... if he is with someone else he is betraying the love he still holds for her.
They both speak of a small crime they have no excuse for, perhaps a small argument that led to their break up? They still love each other and ask if it is ok to move on. The loaded gun is their hearts filled with love for each other. In the end, it is not alright to move on.

9 crimes | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/30/10

Generally, I feel the songs about two people who shared a true, very powerful love dealing with an irrational betrayal. The girl has been cheated on, and it should be straightforward, she feels she should be able to move on. Yet he has apologised and his chorus explains how irrational he finds his actions; 'this is not what I do'.

It would be simpler if he had just stopped loving her, if he had shot that gun, had released the love he has for her in his heart and thus the love she holds for him in her heart. Having not dealt with the situation, they drift apart into new relationships and both he and she are giving a loaded gun away to someone else; their already filled hearts... Both ask 'is that all right with you?', their hearts are still attached yet their lack of communication has resulted in this situation - no one is shooting the gun! No one's saying a proper goodbye... How are they supposed to say goodbye, when no ones holding the gun to shoot away their love?

Meaning? | Reviewer: Gypsy | 12/23/09

I agree that the first part has to be about someone moving on when she's not really ready to like she was cheated on and she can't forgive that. They're still in love, hence giving away the gun when it's loaded (their heart still belongs elsewhere). "If you don't shoot it, how am I suppose to hold it?' to me means if you don't show me how am I suppose to believe in it.The second part is like he's the cheater and he knows he shouldn't have done it so he has no excuse. He's also trying to move on, since he knows she won't forgive him. And when it ends with 'no' it's like it hit them both that they are both not ready to move on (it's not alright).

Is that alright with you? 9 Crimes | Reviewer: Lisa | 11/4/09

I think it is about two people who tried to move on. Give my gun away when it is loaded, means: give my love/heart away when I am already in love with you. That is why it is the wrong time, they are lying to the people they are with, when they know they are in love with each other. Is that alright with you? Is it okay that I move on, when I am still in love with you? How am I supposed to move on if you won't let me go either.......
At the end, "NO" no it isn't alright, we should stay together. Lying is a crime, especially to the heart.

another interpretation | Reviewer: franzi | 7/12/09

i've known this song for a long time. - but when i got pregnant, for the first time i got the feeling that i understand the song completely.

i didn't get the baby. and in my interpretation, the song reflects my thougts and doubts about doing it.
