45 Lyrics - Shinedown

Review The Song (28)

Send away for a priceless gift
One not subtle, one not on the list
Send away for a perfect world
One not simply, so absurd
In these times of doing what you're told
Keep these feelings, no one knows
What ever happened to the young man's heart
Swallowed by pain, as he slowly fell apart

And I'm staring down the barrel of a 45,
I'm swimming through the ashes of another life
There's no real reason to accept the way things have changed
Staring down the barrel of a 45

Send a message to the unborn child
Keep your eyes open for a while
In a box high up on the shelf, left for you, no one else
sponsored links
There's a piece of a puzzle known as life
Wrapped in guilt, sealed up tight

What ever happened to the young man's heart
Swallowed by pain, as he slowly fell apart

[CHORUS]

Everyone's pointing their fingers
Always condemning me
And nobody knows what I believe
I believe

[CHORUS]

I love the song and being in my forties I believe it is about growing older. Not staring down the barrel of a 0.45 caliber gun but staring at the future and the inevitability of growing older and the importance of passing on things learned to children and realizing there is another life in our future and we must leave our youth behind.

It ssems that many people associate this song with their relationships. I may be wrong but to me it seems that it is about World War II. 45 = 1945, barrel of a 45 = barrel of a gun, swimming through the ashes of another life = going through a world or a city in ruins, always condoning me = big men in suits blame the soldiers, in these times you`re doing what you`re told - no need to explain this.

What he ment was not a literal .45 but 45 as in the world as he sees it. There are a lot of ups and downs of life. You take life as you see fit. I have lost a child and it brought me down rock bottom down rock bottom and wanted it all to end to be with him again but i knew that there is way more that i needed to do here including be here for my other children. When you get that down there is always something to live for. Think of the positives and not always the negative t will help you in the long run.

I think Jade really said it best. This song is a beautiful piece of art, and it offers a glimpse into the thoughts of someone who is seriously contemplating their fate between life and death, and it reminds me of how good my life is and inspires me to try harder so I never have to feel what he felt in those moments.

how i feel | Reviewer: kayla | 6/7/10

my friend once told me that he was going through some problems in his life and that the only thing he could ever use to describe it was the lyrics of this song. he told me that every single line in this song was exactly how he felt. at first i was sorta shocked and didn't really know what to say, i was scared on what might happen, since this song says "staring down the barrel of a 45", but then i realized you know what maybe this is a sign for me to help him, and reading mike's story i can agree if you have a friend that is going through some problems like this all you can do is help them come back up and see the bright sides of things, that's all you can really do. i mean you can't make them change opinions on life you can only help lead them to something better. anyways what i'm trying to say is sometimes your friends give you signs that they want help they just don't quite know how to ask for it. so watch out and try to notice things like that so that you might save someone's life, or turn them around, and lead them on the right track. Okay, I don't bother reading everyone's reviews because, well, let's face it, everyone has their own opinions, but mine is--not that you should listen to my opinion since I didn't listen to yours, but here I go--THIS SONG IS AMAZING!!!

Yeah, you'd think I'd come up with something better than that, huh? Well, you thought wrong.

I'm the biggest Shinedown fan, and I can't even prove it. I love Brent Smith to smithereens, and more than that, I think he's a great poet, writer, artistic musician, and singer/rocker. So, this song is no exception. I love the acoustic and the original version--but the original is really really awesome.

Also... Keep Rocking, BRENT~!!! <3

Don't you just hate people like me? I certainly do. Bye bye.

i agree with the people that think he knows what it's like to be steped on and feel worthles. But the people that feel like he wants everyone to be happy and not have a crappy life is stupid because if he was writtring about that he wouldn't be a good writer becaus everyone wants simple stuff not negitive c'mon use your head and for zoey i undestand what you mean because my girlfriend just did something horrible and thats exactly how i felt! and dont even get me started on Andres Garcia! Get your facts staight you hippocrit!

Great Song | Reviewer: Maiko | 10/1/08

I think it talks about that moment of despair you feel when everything in your life suddenly starts looking grey, most probably because of something you did, and that you have 2 choices, either change it for the best (because you ALWAYS have that option), or just let go.

This song talks about the ups and downs in life. It doesnt necessarily have to be a depressing song. If you just stop a minute to listen to and annalyze the lyrics you will understand that its just as much about living as it is about dying. Its a constant reminder to me that you just have to take the good in life as well as the bad. Even if the bad out weighs the good it your lifes choices that ultimately decide your fate

meaning | Reviewer: mike | 2/29/08

when i listened to this song it really spoke to me. I had this friend that was this wasy, one moment in his life he was so happy he had everything. Then one day he made a mistake and was never again happy. He was so sad, me and some of my friends tried to help him through, but we could only do so much. So one day when i'm at home doing some homework i got a call, it was my friends mom she told me that her son (my friend) had commited suicide in his room and she found him that morning. It was shocking news to me i was devastated. I had know him since we were in 1ST grade. I just want to tell people who are reading this and you know someone who wants to commit suicide. Bring them back help them, i dont want someone to go through what i had to deal with its sad and devastating to anyone who is envolved. Thanks for taking the time to read what i have to say i appreciate it

I don't believe this song is about happiness, or wanting to believe in a perfect world without crappy things. I truly believe this singer knows that it's a fantasy that can never be possible. However, I do think this song is about himself; how he once was this person that felt unimaginable happiness, and how he lost it. I don't know how. I find myself in this song: I once lived this life of peace and well being, and I lost it. I felt the pain swallowed me. I wanted to even kill myself, but in the end I came to realize life is hard, and that is a reality that I have to embrace. I believe this singer believes that to. He knows it's hard when he sings "And I'm staring down the barrel of a 45 (45), Swimming through the ashes of another life (another life)No real reason to accept the way things have changed Staring down the barrel of a 45..." He swims through the ashes of the life he had, but at the same time he knows there's no reason to accept that everything should stay this way, there's got to be a way to find that inner peace again. However, he gets weak and looks at the end of a 45 (a gun), while all these feelings of battle and strengh sorround him. The bridge where he sings: "Everyone's pointing their fingers Always condemning me And nobody knows what I believe I believe..." means he has a new meaning for life that many people do not embrace. Maybe, those people used to be his friends or colleagues of some sort, and now they seem to criticize him. In the end it could all mean the path of his life. His experience. How he became who he is right now.
