40 Lyrics

Review The Song (2)

I waited patiently for the Lord
He inclined and heard my cry
He lift me up out of the pit
Out of the miry clay

I will sing, sing a new song
I will sing, sing a new song

How long to sing this song?
How long to sing this song?
How long...how long...how long...
How long...to sing this song

He set my feet upon a rock
And made my footsteps firm
Many will see
Many will see and fear

I will sing, sing a new song
I will sing, sing a new song
I will sing, sing a new song
I will sing, sing a new song

How long to sing this song?
How long to sing this song?
How long...how long...how long...

"40" = Psalm 40, from the Bible | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/8/11

J2 - you are thinking too hard about this. This is pure and simple Psalm 40 put to music (hence the title of the song "40")! Many of U2 songs are very Biblical - and this one literally was taken directly from the Bible. Just read Psalm 40 and you'll see:

1 I waited patiently for the LORD;
he turned to me and heard my cry.
2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.
3 He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear the LORD
and put their trust in him.

fathers father | Reviewer: J2 | 10/11/10

this song i have listened to for twenty years or so, at it's core it has ,as you have to understand from a young mans perspective of living through the troubles of ireland and n/ireland.The dominant fact, singing the song of my father. In Ireland at that time you have to remember that Catholicism and prodestism are prevelant and ingrained in ever family and in social life , then you have a young man trying to break the chain of the incumbant thoughts of the peers who their fathers have to live by.It's a very short song but none the less if you listen a very heart felt cry for help and a cry to heaven for a generation who where sick of following a trail which in the end led nowhere.
