4 + 20 Lyrics - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
Review The Song (4)
Four and Twenty years ago
I come into this life,
the son of a woman
And a man who lived in strife.
He was tired of being poor
And he wasn't into selling door to door
And he worked like a devil to be more.
A different kind of poverty now upsets my soul
Night after sleepless night
I walk the floor and I want to know
Why am I so alone?
Where is my woman, can I bring her home?
Have I driven her away?
Is she gone?
Morning comes the sunrise,
And I'm driven to my bed
sponsored linksI see that it is empty
And there's devils in my head.
I embrace the many colored beast.
I grow weary of the torment
Can there be no peace?
And I find myself just wishing that my life would simply cease.

the green beast | Reviewer: Jeffre blair | 10/17/13
This is a storie of a man that grew up in merial poverty and has left it bhind. He is now engaged in a poverty of love. Love of a certain woman that is now missing. At night that fact torments his soul all the more. As morning comes he is so very tired, and as he strives to get rest ! He sees the empty bed and the torment of his soul is filled with so uch anguish and pain he can literally see it in his mind ! Thus he morns for death!!!
Modernity's Materialism and the Human Need for Meaning | Reviewer: George | 6/1/13
First heard this in my late teens. It struck me then as it does now at 60. It is a concise description of one striving for material comfort at the expense of searching for a purpose in life that nurtures the craving for peace and harmony that lies within us all.
This is the REAL DEAL review. HEAR this song, learn it well, make it your friend. | Reviewer: bill hanna | 8/14/12
THIS IS NOT A SIMPLE BULL SHIT REVIEW. ....... 4+20 is a simple tune and minimal lyrics can reach into an open mind and absolutely shake your soul with a truth we all know. I learned this tune as a young man. Over these many years i often thought it beyond my happy mind, and yet it has always been in reach to sing and to once again touch my soul.
And now, i lay here dying, yet the words come again to my lips. Once again i send my eternal question. Perhaps this time perhaps the answer of a final peace is close at hand. Perhaps this time, my wish will be answered.
The Faustian Four and Twenty years | Reviewer: nishant lama | 9/25/07
I was recently struck by the thematic parallel's between this song and the the play by Christopher Marlowe " Dr Faustus" who sells 24 years of his life for magic and knowledge to mephistopheles for a lifetime in hell; particularly in the song, the last verse mirrors faust's last days when he goes to his bed in the morning , only to see the devil and thus embraces the many coloured beast.
