OMG. I grew up in the 70 &80. I love 38 special. My beeautiful wife seperated from me recently and it hurts so deep inside. I found this CD and this song was on it. Man it hit me like a ton of bricks. This song was singing about me. Its like going back in time to the 80s. When I told her "What if Id have been the one to say goodbye? Could u stand ther with a smile on ur face when inside u wanna cry. She just looked then I played here the song..... It was magic.

I loved this song, and still do. I first heard this song in the trailer that we lived in back in '83\'84. .38 Special is one of the best southern rock bands of all time, and from the first time I heard this song on 99.5, to this day, If I'd Been The One is still one of my favorite 80's rock songs. I heard this song alot as a kid, and now it touches me so deep because it symbolizes a relationship i never got over. I met a girl when we were kids, we dated as teens, and we were seperated for 5 years, and are now talking again. The old feelings have come back 1000 fold, and I'm thinking of sending these lyrics and the music to my ex. .38 Special is awesome, and always will be awesome.Im 21, but I love the older bands from the 80's. And, yes, other bands could learn from these guys.

I heard this song on my wife's IPOD on a flight from LA to Frankfurt. I've been home now for 3 days and I can't get it out of my mind, so I am going to learn to play it, sing it (probably thrash it) and accept that I stumbled onto a great song.

When I first heard it and saw the video as a kid (had Bruce Springsteen's wife at the time in the vid), I liked it...now I love it! Every time I go through my rock-n-roll list of songs on my computer/mp3, if it even catches my eye, I choose it and listen to it 2 or 3 times....

This has to be my favorite 38 Special song. The mood and vocals of this song are captivating. The lead singer reminds me a bit of Steve Perry. The lyrics are compelling. It's ironic really...I don't sympathize with the fellow singing this song, since he betrayed his woman in the worst way. His pleas don't even sound particularly penitent. His pitiful, "Please forgive memand forget it" is typical of a man who has been weathering under the unyielding contempt of his ex without understanding how deeply he has indeed hurt her.

But...a great song indeed. I sing it loud when it comes on the radio--even though I can't really relate to it. But, if I ever were unfaithful to my wife, I would use this song to try and woo her back. Maybe.
