10,000 Days (Wings Part 2) Lyrics - Tool

Review The Song (22)

Listen to the tales and romanticize,
How we'd follow the path of the hero.
Boast about the day when the rivers overrun.
How we rise to the height of our halo.

Listen to the tales as we all rationalize
Our way into the arms of the savior,
Feigning all the trials and the tribulations;
None of us have actually been there.
Not like you.

Ignorant siblings in the congregation
Gather around spewing sympathy,
Spare me.
None of them can even hold a candle up to you.
Blinded by choice, these hypocrites won't see.

But, enough about the collective Judas.
Who could deny you were the one who
sponsored links
Illuminated your little piece of the divine?

And this little light of mine, a gift you passed on to me;
I'm gonna let it shine to guide you safely on your way,
Your way home ...

Oh, what are they going to do when the lights go down
Without you to guide them all to Zion?
What are they going to do when the rivers overrun
Other than tremble incessantly?

High is the way, but all eyes are upon the ground.
You were the light and the way they'll only read about.
I only pray, Heaven knows when to lift you out.
Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough;
You're going home.

You're the only one who can hold your head up high,
Shake your fists at the gates saying:
"I've come home now!
Fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father.
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.
It's time now!
My time now!
Give me my, give me my wings!"

You are the light and way that they will only read about.

Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance,
(With the) burden of proof tossed upon the believers.
You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence,
Judith Marie, unconditional one.

Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescents.
Difficult to see you in this light.
Please forgive this bold suggestion, but
Should you see your Maker's face tonight,
Look Him in the eye, look Him in the eye, and tell Him:
"I never lived a lie, never took a life, but surely saved one.
Hallelujah, it's time for you to bring me home."

Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence

In my mind this is showing that the final day has ended and she has died. Time has passed. The harsh lights of the hospital have replaced the daylight of the last day

Difficult to see you in this light

No one wants to see someone they love like this. It would be very difficult to see them. If it was me my tears would also make to hard to see.

I think this song is very moving but this lines seem to resonate.

To Brian.

Thank you for your review. I've been a Tool, APC and Puscifer, aswell as a CAD- (well, a Maynard-) fan for about a year now. I completely love his way of portraying reality and fiction into stories that goes hand in hand perfectly with the music and his voice.
How you deciphered these lyrics (not that hard as you pointed out) made this song 10 000 times better, I tremble every time I hear it, especially the "Oh, what are you going to do when the lights go down"- part. It's so beautiful.
I'm so sorry to hear about your paralyzis, I have family that have the same condition and they are in a lot of pain.
Again, than you for your effort of explaining these lyrics, I'm shaking to the depth of Maynards talent.
Really, I am, if you could send my vibrations over the internet it would hit the Richter scale.

It's funny. I just realized that both Nelson Mandela and Judith Marie were imprisoned for 27 years, and then released to do great things.
And neither of their faiths grew weaker during those 27 years of suffering.

Ok...so to finish my review of part 2 this song is about his mother obviously but we tend to miss the forest for the ugliness of some it's tree's sometimes, don't we? Not only is it about his mother but it's obviously about the church as well.

I cried when I heard this song and did my customary research. Why? Several reasons. First I found out about his mothers situation. I too am partially paralyzed and have a chronic pain disease. I related to that part. I was raised Baptist and have fallen out of the church too. What does that mean? Nothing other than the fact that I get some references on a personal level. This doesn't make me special so don't flame my email telling me stupid stuff about how you will spit in my face for whatever reason. I can delete faster than you can type and I got one arm ya little hookers with penises.

Since this song is one of the least cryptic out there once you're familiar with the situation let's talk about some of the obscure references to make your listening expierence even greater...let's ascend...shall we?

Song begins about how Baptist like to get a woody over Revelations and how Jesus will save them. They all believe they will get a free ticket to Heaven (first 1,000 get free toasters). The Baptist (Christians) believe that they will skip past the trials and tribulations described in Revelations but Maynards saying they don't know what that's like...not like his Mom who has lived in a living hell or tribulation for so long.

The ignorant "fibbers" in the congregation refers to all the liars who go to church, duh. They gather to give sympathy. He's not hearing it or buying into it, duh. Could he have been in a Church when he heard this or was it graveside?

The collective Judas being the same Christians gathered. This is saying if Christ were here on Earth today these people are so weak in their faith they would sell Jesus out for some quick cash. Their faith is weak. His mother shed light on her piece of the divine? Who is divine here? Jesus? Maynard? This could be a very very obscure reference to only something between her and him. No further comment necessary.

This little light of mine reference. "This little light of mine" is a christian children's song. I used to sing it when I was a kid. Sounds to me like Judith Marie was the one who got Maynard's love of music going. Maybe it was her favorite song he would sing as a kid. It was a gift. Songs and music are gifts. This is Maynard's gift to us. There is a scriptural reference to this song. Wikipedia...it's free...look it up.

The song goes on about how the tribulations start and the fibbers start to run around like chickens with their heads cut off, duh. He states his mother was the type that they would read about in the scripture but they obviously weren't, duh that's obvious right? right.

High is the way but all eyes are upon the ground. This refers to the belief heaven is up and these "headless chickens" are looking at the ground. Could this be a recurring theme in Maynard's immagination of how we are going to end life on earth...aka AEnema...with Earthquakes and such other great displays of mother natures brute force. I think so.

He prays Heaven pulls her fleshly body out before it all get's flushed down the toilet. "10,000 days in the fire is long enough"...this is the part I cried at. Why? Because it's very, very painful being paralyzed. Brain injuries that cause paralysis can cause what's called RSD or CRPS (google it noobs). It's also called "burning man syndrome". Or it could just mean that she spent 10,000 days in a hell here on Earth. Either way it's touching and moved me on a level no other tool song has. Thank you Maynard, Danny, Justin and Adam...thank you.

The rest of the song is very obvious and open for fierce debate. Did he whisper this in his dying mothers ear. Um, I'm thinking we may never know and I don't think anyone ask him "backstage"...that's a bit personal. Considering how Maynard talks to dumb reporters I'm thinking he would have pulled an Ozzy and bit someone's head off...but that's just me.

The bit about his mother saving his life. It's obvious it figurative and not literal. However, that "saving" could mean she showed him the light toward salvation or it could mean her unconditional love for him and her strength made him a better person and he wanted to get off drugs and live for her...hence she "saved" him. I don't know, you don't know and my talking dog doesn't know. Again, only a few really know so don't pretend you do. It only makes you lose credibility.

Enjoy...and for the love of Jesus Christ on a biscuit...love each other. You trendy little hipsters, can you live your life just one tenth like Judith Marie did? That sounds like a tall order...maybe you should take it slow.

no doubt but.. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/2/10

well i agree.. i went to a tool concert about a year back and due to my cousin being the stage director like setting it up and stuff i got vip passes.. so.. i was able to speak with all the members while sitting back watching tv.. and i asked them a few song meanings.. maynards mom was paralyzed for 20some years.. near 10,000 days.. and this song.. is about her battle for life and how they beleive in her all the time but would turn around and put there heads down thinking the worst.. how he talks about her leading them along and how what will they do when the lights go down.. is what will they do without her.. she has shown them everything.. and shown them there is a higher power and to always beleive.. it was said that before she died maynard said the last few lines to her that night.. Please forgive this bold suggestion, but
Should you see your Maker's face tonight,
Look Him in the eye, look Him in the eye, and tell Him:
"I never lived a lie, never took a life, but surely saved one.
Hallelujah, it's time for you to bring me home."
and what he meant by that is for his mom to finally let go.. she had lived her life to the fullest she could have.. and she had touched many peoples lives.. and that her time was over.. and if she died that night.. it would be a long fufilled life.. and to tell god.. shes done her best.. let her rest now.. its time for you to bring me home..

maynards voice and tools music is one of the many bands i listen to but by far the deepest and most touching bands i have ever heard.. should every one of them die tomorrow their music would live on forever.. traveling among the many years and ages that it will touch..
long live the depth.. and serenity that tool has brought our lives and cultures all around the world..

While you may disagree with some peoples interpretation of the song (yes it was written for his mother) you would be spit on by Maynard (and me) for being a close minded fuck. You are completely the opposite of an open minded individual and what Tool stand for, nuff said.

great.....touching........ | Reviewer: ShadowRoy888 | 3/1/10

@ ok stfu
1) what's up with your name? "ok stfu" I think sometimes YOU need to stfu....
2) his mom wasn't in a coma. I actually did a bit deeper look into the lyrics of this, Wings, and Right in Two.

The REAL meaning is this. His mother was parylized for a lot of years, whatever would equal 10,000 DAYS. during that time, he was an anti-Christian, writing many anti-Christian songs on A Perfect Circle, about her being one, i.e. Judith. he thought that if God really loved everyone, He wouldve healed her, but that's not how God works. after many long years, Judith Marie, his mother, died. when she did die, he finally became a Christian. and so, he wrote this series of songs to show that he was now a Christian, and thanking his mom. also, this is just a guess, but I think the reason why Rosetta Stones is 11:11 for it's length, is because of how many times he curses (31 times, to be exact. lol I counted). so, he made it 11:11 because of the wish thing people do at 11:11 am and pm, wishing to God that he wouldn't be punished for the 12 times he says the F bomb in one song.

STFU NOOBS | Reviewer: ok stfu | 8/25/09

ok im so tired of seeing these noobs here telling what they think this song means or how it relates to them. STFU. it DOES NOT relate you at all. this song is between maynard and his mum. it has NOTHING that can possibly relate to anyone except another person whose mum was in a coma and died.

This song...
My feelings for it are so hard to describe, my two cousins, that are like brothers to me, are in Iraq, and there isn't a moment I jut have to think the word war that I don't feel like crying about what could happen to them. I don't know what I would do if they died, I just- oh and here I am, blubbering, already having started to cry. I miss them so much, and like the rest of our nations veterans, let them come home to us alive. If you're someone lik me, why don't you contact me on facebook? Coraline Corleon

God, we all know that you must be busy, but if you can, send them home safe.

I think this song is the most beautiful in the 10,000 days album, although it's difficult to pick one. But it really has a strong emotional impact, whatever the original subject of the lyrics may be.

this song is amazing because i think anyone who listens to it lyrically can take whatever they feel from it. whether or not it truly IS dedicated to his mom or not.

10,000 Days Means... | Reviewer: night Falls | 7/30/07

I don't want to spoil people's opinions about what this song means, though it is very emotional, the songs Wings For Marie and 10,000 Days are about Maynard's mother, who suffered a stroke and left her partially paralyzed until 27 years (approximately 10,000 Days) later, when she died.

The songs themselves are beautiful, dark, and tantalizingly creepy. A wonderful piece of art to be kept throughout the ages.
