Review about 'J' For Jules
Thoughts about a love anthem | Reviewer: Christopher A. Barry | 10/6/2005It is quite possible that the driving force behind all of Aimee Mann's music has been her fascination with the melancholy, and her innate ability to equally well relate the most personal affairs of the heart to quality song lyrics. Aside from the obvious, it is easy to sense the deep reluctance with which Mann says goodbye to someone much closer than a friend while trying to paint a portrait of how she always thought of their relationship through the use of creative metaphor that doesn't play to the trite, cliche, or simple mindedness of other music of the same time. A powerful use of language to convey her deep sentiments of longing, loss and remembrance characterizes the construction of a song that has withstood the test of time.
