Xavier Is a Savior | Reviewer: James | 2/10/2005

I was lucky enough to hear Xavier Rudd live at Winston's in San Diego. At the time, I had never heard him and had no intentions of going into Winston's that night, but was encouraged by this outrageous didgeridoo playing complemented by pure, fresh vocals, percussion and guitar playing. I mean, the sound of the band that was playing on stage floated out into the street and created a warmth and energy that is hard to describe. No, I don't do drugs (nor have I ever!) nor was I drinking. So I went into the club (a relatively small venue, but with excellent acoustics & reputation; hence why someone of Xavier's caliber might play there). As I waded through the crowd (the size of which I had never seen crammed into Winston's), I nearly fell over when I realized the sounds I was hearing were all coming from one person live on stage!!! But each piece in the band was by no means filler--each was quite remarkably played when compared to the sound of individual musicians playing in perfect syncronicity. I watched, mesmerized, as Xavier pumped out wave after wave of rich music full of energy, excitement and, in many cases, deep meaning. The songs were varied in intensity and style, showing the versatility and talent of his artistry, which I would in no way label as a 'one man band' (yet, technically, aside from the sound man, he is). As a folk artist, Xavier's lyrics often go beyond just entertaining and begin to address not only some of the pressing issues of our time, but the nature of life itself. Spiritual music from someone who is soulful, down to earth, and extremely talented. It was a healing experience. However, I nearly died after the show was over when Xavier took the time to sign autographs and make himself available to anyone who wanted to talk to him (before his publicist and staff wisked him away). Great guy. My friends (two girls) had their picture taken with him. Needless to say, the ladies were absolutely delighted to meet the humble, kind, handsome young man behind the music (this didn't particularly hurt the guys that were there, either!). I bought two CDs to remember one of the best live shows I have ever seen (and he sounds better live than on the CD because of his improvisation and creativity--the overall sound quality is the same--a rarity in this age of technology and lacking talent). Xavier's music helps everyone connect a little bit better with their own humanity. It's what good art and music is all about!
