Simple. They probably stuck the bits and pieces of the background they heard into google. I did and I came up with Winston Churchill's first radio address as Prime Minister and Be Ye Men of Valour for the two background lyrics respectively. From there one could simply copy the words from each, listening for the vicinity in which the song cuts them off. I say vicinity because if you listen, Churchill continues talking past "for the life of our country," though it does fade out. There also seems to be more background lyrics between the two listed here but they are too indistinct at least for me to make out even one word. Also, I do not pretend to actually know how they did it, but this is one way anyone could. The easiest way is to get the lyrics from the band whether through a CD leaflet or vocal/instrument book/sheet music, which should at the very least reference the background if they don't actually have it written out.

How do they know??! | Reviewer: CKVB | 6/4/09

We were looking for the lyrics of the background, and here we found them. Awesome ofcourse, but now are we wondering how the Hell those people know what the background sang. Because you can hardly hear the background!

A Wonderful Inspiration. | Reviewer: Wong Lee | 5/4/09

This song is about Buddha. Buddha is wonderful. He faced the challenges of life and overcome them with peace and serenity. Thank you, Within Temptation, for writing this marvelous ode to the Buddha.

I first heard this song on an AMV on YouTube and I thought: "That is just awesome! I need to find it!" As a huge music enthusiast as well as pianist and flutist, I felt absolutely inspired by that song.

Incredible song! | Reviewer: NekoMimi | 9/28/08

This is one of the songs that deserves a palce in history as a beautiful, meaningful melody! It has an amazing melody and emotional lyrics we can all learn from. As a symphonic metal songrwter and singer myself, I know I'll never beat Within Temptation when it comes down to being a simply incredible peice of music. I see them as an inspration to the world of music and truly talented artists.

Amazing! | Reviewer: Wren | 8/2/08

Not only are all the members of the band incredibly talented musically, I'm repeatedly stunned by their talents lyrically. This song is AMAZING, along with all the other songs on this album (the others too). The meaning behind the songs and the lessons we could learn from this one in particular are great, as well. I think that's a lot of what makes this band so awesome.

Beautiful. | Reviewer: Mina | 7/16/08

Our Solemn Hour is a masterpiece. Because of its surreal lyrics and breathtaking music, this song should be revered throughout history.

And the singing? Ijust might steal Sharon away someday! ^_^

Should be a worldwide hit by now | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/13/08

Sharon and the band really outdid themselves with "Our Solemn Hour". The battles in Flanders Fields raged in WWI (A tremendous battle is raging in France and Flanders...)but I prefer to think it's a song about both WWI and WWII. The first verse represents WWI, the second, WWII (at least in to me). The first verse shows the shock that overtakes any country when they are shoved into war, as Great Britain, the USA and other Allied powers were in WWI. The second shows the incredulity of WWII soldiers storming Germany and seeing the terible persecution against many different peoples there, i. e. Jewish people, Christian people, people with mental issues such as insanity, or disabled people. I love the words:If we can't restrain/The beast which dwells inside/It will find it`s way somehow, somewhere in time/Will we remember all of the suffering/`Cause if we fail it will be in vain....
It's a warning to us. Will we remember the bloodshed-of innocents and conspirators alike and on both sides? Will we remember the casualtis of past wars? Will we remember it? Can we restrain the bad/evil within ourselves?
If we do not, it will show itself in one way or another-acts, thoughts, words, deeds.
"If we can't restrain the beat that dwells inside, it WILL find its way, somehow, somewhere in time...."

Sanctus Espiritus! | Reviewer: Seth | 2/1/08

Sanctus is latin for "holy", while Espiritus is latin for "breath", or more roughly "life" or "spirit". So it basically means Holy Spirit. So the song's about the victims of the war attack calling out to God, and the battle between good and evil that rages inside ourselves (If we can't restrain the best which dwells inside/it will find it's way somehow, somewhere in time)
Great song, awesome meaning, and all around beautiful.
