This is definitely about FitzChivalry Farseer from Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy. The main character of the series is a prince's illegitimate child. At the beginning of the book, he literally has no name. He is also gifted with a strange, despised magic. (read the books to find out what it is.) He grows up secretly learning to be the royal assassin. At first he enjoys this work since it wins him approval, but as he gradually realises what his work is really about he occasionally wishes he had chosen a different, more honourable path, especially since it frequently comes between him and the woman he loves. Also he has come to hate the war that is the book's main plot, I haven't read book 3 yet so I don't know what happens in the end, but…well…yeah.
