And has no love interest (she did, but let us say an... "unfortunate event" occurred resulting in a painful death before much could happen). Such a pity, regardless. I really do like this song, though. Now, we begin heavy-duty song dissecting, so to speak. Taken from my point of view, it is the tale of a mercenary, perhaps granted magical powers, maybe a member of the royal family. He is forced to obey the crown, not his heart or whatever else he wants to follow-his internal compass, if you please. Thus he casts love in the metaphorical grave to fulfill his duty to the kingdom. (You may cue the sentimental music now, Maestro.) He fights a war he doesn't believe in (much like Iraq, personally speaking) and wonders all the while if his sins will be justified. I've read the lyrics to this song and everyone elses comments and i do see where they are coming from, obviously songs are written to be read how people want to read them so no-one can be right or wrong. I have no answers for the first 4 lines but when it gets into the song i can see a link between marriage and falling for someone else, maybe because the marriage isnt working - like where it says obeying his honor - like his marriage vows but then on the other hand there's the love of his life - the person he's falling for. When I listen to it, I don't think of anything modern like the war in Iraq, but I think that it could be anything, depending on the listener. I think of omething in the olden days, filled with magic, wonder, and awesomeness... but that's just me. Yeah and I think that 'Obeying the crown was a sinister crime' is supposed to be 'Obeying the crown was a sinister price'.
