A soldier | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/14/07
This is a story of a soldier going to war and leaving the loved ones behind... He's off to the war to killing innocents, in the end,
"So many years have past, who are the noble and the wise?
Will all our sins be justified?"
Like in, the war is over, did we fought for a cause? because no war makes sense. :)
great song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/13/07
maybe this is just because i'm american, but i take the song to be about the war in iraq and how screwed up it is. "will all our sins be justified?" like, will anything good actually come out of it. and how the soldiers just want to be home with their friends and family. and "He surely would flee, but the oath made him stay" like how they would go home if they could but they can't because they have to serve out their time there before they can go home. i just drew a lot of connections between the lyrics and iraq. but that's just my personal take on it.
I like songs that tell a story like this one | Reviewer: me | 8/30/07
heh, I'd have to go with a ninja or a samurai, but then again I've been reading lots of stuff from that setting, so yeah!

Sorrowful, I guess... =) | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/8/07
Great song. To be honest no matter how much I think and listen I cannot think about the main character being anyone but samurai. But that's just me =)
story? | Reviewer: Alko ai | 7/18/07
the guy could be a normal person in a town that serves one lord, but he could fall in love with the ruler that is opposing them, and serve them. But before that he village finally values him. so they find out one day and torture him. and he has to stay cause of some promiseor oath but eventually he gets scared and runs away. and, um, yeah...

Brilliant song! I love it!!! I reckon that a possible meaning could be (if you believe the Davinci Code) is explaining how Jesus had a duty to God and all that but he fell inlove with Mary Magdeline along the way and he prayed for both love and honour but was denied. very touching! sad but beautiful!
An explanation | Reviewer: Tom Foster | 7/12/07
I believe this song relates to the character of Fitz from Robin Hobb's fantasy series, "The Farseer Trilogy".
Fitz is the bastard-born son Prince Chivalry, the otherwise perfect heir to the throne of the Six Dutchies. At the age of seven his peasant mother, unable to feed or care for him leaves him at a border fortress with an explanation of his royal blood. The stain he represents on his father's honour prompts the Prince to abdicate, and shortly after Chivalry is murdered in a feigned hunting accident.
Fitz grows up in the Kingdom's main castle, called Buck Keep (named both for the Buck Duchy in which it sits and the Buck that appears as a motif in the heraldry of much of the ruling family, the Farseers).
The first book moves him swiftly through his early years. Unsure of what to do with him his uncle Verity, Chivalry's younger brother puts him in the care of Burrich, formally Chivalry's right hand man and, following his master’s exile, the stable master at Buck Keep. Both resent the other although Fitz depends on Burrich, and comes to regard him as a father figure and Burrich in turn cares for Fitz first as the son of the master he loved and eventually in his own right they row frequently.
When Fitz is in his teens King Shrewd, Fitz’ father and Chivalry’s grandfather, arranges for Fitz to be given a more fitting education and upbringing, but Fitz still returns to the stables often to seek comfort with Burrich. King Shrewd, who is seldom seen on page, also arranges for Fitz to be trained by the mysterious Chade Fallstar, the King’s personal assassin. He takes Fitz on as his apprentice assassin and diplomat. Much of the first book covers Fitz training as an assassin, and his early missions. During this time he develops a relationship with Molly, a chandler’s daughter from the town beneath Buck Keep. He cannot reveal to her who he really is, or what occupies much of his time, so she is incapable of understanding why he is unable to spend more time with her. The nature of Fitz’ work becomes a growing problem between them. She is the “love” referred to in the song.
I have not touched on the main plots of the books but only on the experiences of Fitz, the first person narrator, since those are the terms of the song. The trilogy is noted for it’s intensely emotional feel as Fitz is constantly being torn between conflicting duties and believes himself inadequate for all of them.
For more details see my note on “The Cross”.

I love this song. It is strong and powerful. I also love the music to it. Once again Within Temptation has made a fine piece of work.
Those asking for an explination, I am not totaly sure. I have not read up on it.
I may be reading too deeply into the song but it outlines a story. A man has to obey the ruler, it means killing innocents. To me it sounds as if this ruler is a tyrant. If you have seen the huntchback of notredame, you will see that the man wanted to get rid of gypsies. Any gypsie or person accused of hiding them were killed. The soldier was ordered to kill a family who were accused of hiding gypsies. He loved a gypsie himself. Therefore he had to chose between love and his concionce or his leader.
Im not saying this is about the story. But that is the kind of story it outlines. A deeper meaning would mean that you have many choices. The choices can often cause you great pain and torment. The song shows teh choice between ruler and loved ones. You sometimes have to leave people behind, and leave your loved ones.
Another meaning that comes out in this song is about power. Abserlout power currupts abserloutly.
Thats just my guess. XD
