By what weird rationale do we justify this to ourselves? Yet, we take both things for granted much of the time. It brings to mind a TV episode of a Bank accoutant whose day is one long harrasment for trying to read (paper or books - wife and bosses). While he takes lunch to read in the vault the city is nuked. Coming out he makes his way through the debris to the steps of a huge library. As he eagerly makes his way up he trips and shatters his glasses (Like coke bottles!!) We'er left watching him stare, sitting on the steps in the midst of the books unable to read them. More familiar and available would be the Movie "Dr. Strangelove".
