The Reviews about Say It Ain't So (page 1/ 3)

That makes complete sense.
The drinking was probably caused by the lead up to the divorce, rather than the reverse. Why do parents name their children River, Leaf, Field, etc... I'm gonna call mine Bypass, Junction and Temporary Diversion (in that order).

Say It Ain't So | Reviewer: Luke | 10/15/09

In an interview a couple years back Rivers talked about the meaning of this song. His real dad started drinking more right before he divorced Rivers' mom. A couple years later when Rivers was 16 he got home from school and saw his step-dad's (Steven) Heineken in the fridge and got freaked out because the last time beer was in the fridge his parents got divorced. He is trying to distract himself with TV or wrestling with his brother (Leaves Cuomo went by Jimmy, Rivers went by Peter as in Peter Criss of Kiss) and yet behind his back the problem is still there. The chorus and the next verse are self explanatory, and the bridge is just Rivers reaching out to his father about his anxiety.

Like father, step-father, the son is drowning in the flood

This is just a comparison of his two dads and how he is being suffocated by the alcoholism of those around him. Funny enough, Rivers asked him mom several years later about his biological dad's drinking in relation to the divorce, and it had absolutely nothing to do with it.

i think wrestle with jimmy might literally mean wrestle with jimmy. like play with a kid or something. like hes trying to just relax and watch TV and have fun with his kid but he cant stop thinking about drinking. juuuuuuuuuuuuuust an idea

Maybe the best song on the album | Reviewer: Drinker69 | 7/18/09

Ok, here's my take on this song.

I think the song is about the alcohol problems of the person singing the song. Maybe not literally the lead singer or the person who penned the song (poetic license and all that), but it's told from the first person. It is someone who is struggling with their own drinking problem. Take for example the chorus:

Say it ain't so
Your drug is a heartbreaker
Say it ain't so
My love is a lifetaker

It makes no sense as it is sung, unless the subject is really one in the same: the monster in the person who just has to drink, and the rational side of the same person who knows what is up. In that context, the first verse is interesting:

Somebody's Heine' is crowdin' my icebox
Somebody's cold one is givin' me chills
Guess I'll just close my eyes

Yeah, "somebody" is actually him!

Well, I could go on, but I myself have struggled with (and continue to struggle with) an alcohol problem, so I'm familiar with the "two sides of a person" aspect." Read the rest for yourself in this light and see what you think.

My Lecture for the day:
If you haven't started drinking, don't drink. It's really not that great, and what you lose is much greater that what you gain.

Rockband today | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/10/09

i am 10 yrs of age... I was singing this song on Rock band today, you know the fast bit:
This way is a waterslide away from me that takes you further every day. i didnt realise tht i actually sang tht bit then like 4 secs after i sang it i was like OMG did i just sing tht?! hehe :)
This is a good song btw =]

Oh come on | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/29/09

The song is obviously about his feelings of his father's alcoholism. Wrestling with Jimmy is referring to Jim Bean liquor, not anything else. All of the names in the song are a type of alcohol. I mean what the hell? This isn't necessarily a song where you can read too much in to it. It's a good song, but come on.

conversion through video games | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/30/09

i heard this song when i was a kid and liked it but didnt know the name.... then i was playin rockband a few days ago and i heard it... its fuckin sweet... rock band and guitar hero have actually converted me from a rap/hiphop guy to a rock listener...

Amazingly mellow | Reviewer: Mike G. | 12/21/08

This song is the epitome of early 90's alternative rock, in my mind.

I hear this song and am brought back to warm summer days, riding in a car with the windows down, radio on, hearing Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and all the likes on the radio playing their hits.

I dont understand why you would find it sad that a person becomes a fan of a band through rockband. its a great way for bands to broaden thier fan base and if someone hears a song they like off it and start listening to them thats fantastic!!

things are good or so I hear | Reviewer: Amy | 11/17/08

I've gotta say, Maladroit isn't half bad. Give it a chance, and trust me, it'll grow on ya. Also, Make Believe and the Red Album are just completely different from the rest of the albums--Although it's inevitable, I'd try not to keep comparing the new stuff to the "classics"-Rivers seems all about experimentation these days, and he's also a completely different person than when he was writing for the Blue Album and Pinkerton--married with children, and whatnot, and less angsty. I think part of the appeal of the older albums is that it had a young person's vision + raw and troubled emotion. I think in general he seems more happy these days.
