After several joyous, gorgeous, magnificently happy albums (Moondance, His Band and the Street Choir, Tupelo Honey) came the more troubled, introspective, and, frankly, odd St. Dominick's Preview.

And with it, a few great songs, and also a couple of amazing...things...Almost Independence Day, and Listen to the Lion...

The latter is one of the oddest and most beautiful things I've ever heard this side of Mozart and Beethoven. Not that it's musically like them, just that in emotional intensity it approaches them. Just a gorgeous, evocative piece of work.

I first heard Van Morrison's very old song, 'Listen to the Lion' on a loudspeaker on a smokey bus driving through the hills around Bandung, Central Java, Indonesia, in 1975.
It remains for me one of the most evocative of his seemingly chanelled works, an equal to (but separate from) the singular genius of Astral Weeks.
It's always a deep pleasure to hear although remarkably hard to locate to purchase.
