This song reminds me of the time when i was very young. My parents are divorced and they can not stand each other. This is one of my mothers Favorite songs and i just found out it's also a favorite of my father aswell. This is my favorite song of all time and i feel a connection to both of them with this song. I grew up with this song and it has always been powerful for me, even when I was younger and didn't understand all it meant. I've been separated from my wife and am almost divorced. When everything fell apart, I remember listening to this song over and over again and can admit to breaking down every time. Still, even as I've moved on, or at least have attempted to, this song is STILL quite difficult to listen to. Though I know this song has certain religious conotations to it, I STILL hear it and think about when everything fell apart.

It's great that this song brings so sweet memories of romances, but I believe that this song is about God. You can see that the singer speaks about waiting for someone or something while being with his lover. So I think Bono is thinking about his religious feelings along with his love for this woman and is waiting for a blessing, maybe?
I guess "I can't live with [you]" means God seems too high to be reached or understood, while "without" means we're hopeless without God

I dated this girl for about 3-4 months and she really didnt understand why i liked this song at first. When i would visit her we would go to this bar and I would play it all the time. One time in particular I played this song...we both sang and held each other in an isolated portion of the bar with no one around, with no regard for anyone except us. It was one of the first times I really felt in my young life, what it would be like to truly fall in love with someone. I will never forget that moment, one of the best times Ive ever had with someone I was with and this song brings it back everytime....Even after it ended, I will always have that moment with her. Amazing song.

I've probably listened to this song over 200 times..and im still not sick of it.
My ex boyfriend use to say it was one of his favourite songs..i listened to it a few times while we were together..and i thought it was a good song..but it never did have much meaning to me..until he was gone.
One day i heard it on the radio..and i started to cry, because it reminded me so much of him and how i felt.
Every since that day, I haven't stopped listening to it.
Its truly an amazing, powerful song.

my interpretation of this song is that there is more meant lyrically than a relationship. it defines our lives; our lives that were given and belong to God. the title itself gives the exploration into living with and without God. we can't live with/without him.. we cannot live with him for the reasons of us all having sin and not being pure of sin. physically, we also cannot live with him and many struggle with the concept of his existance soley because he is not visible. we cannot live without him for the reasons of life becoming a misery and feeling lost.. without him, without our prayers being listened to.. we are nothing. also, without him, those who have accepted him would then be turning away from God, and later punished.
'and you give yourself away' - the line is self-explanatory. God gave himself away, for our sins, by giving his son Jesus.
'through the storm, we reach the shore' - life can be described as a storm but the shore is reached when entering his kingdom.
'you give it all, but i want more' - the moral yearning that every individual has for more in life. be that physically or mentally, god has given the world, given us our lives, given us his son.. yet we want more. we crave physical possessions and more than perhaps we deserve.
