Bi the way the newr modl is really stinky considering there is no real message one may relate from being raped othr than owwwwwww that hurts and you knoow you should be dead aaaaer Y is this my responsibility.............rapisist loser!!!!!!
My question is why people in the eighties & keep this type of stuff censored when the help is readily available coz the drugz r totally crappy now? Question Mark another reason why the music industry is used and bent like a old faithfull hobag ....doesn't sound like really very intresting,Glad I never bought into that puke all it eva did fo me .....

I agree the song is about the narrator's feelings towards a woman who is in an abusive relationship. This is my full interpretation:
The woman goes to buy cigarettes for her abusive man, and counts the change because he'll hit her if she comes back with the wrong amount. She is in denial and says she "feels alive" when he hits her, which the narrator doesn't believe.
She's like a "vampire" or a "victim" depending on who's around - she's a victim if it's her abusive boyfriend, and she's a vampire if it's the narrator, because she sucks love out of him but doesn't give any back. She only finds escape through TV.
She's emotionally dead to the world, and doesn't give anything to the narrator, even though she is having an affair with him.
The narrator feels that if he could stay with her - instead of having to meet her for brief trysts before she goes back to her abusive boyfriend - then she would get better. If he could stay overnight, that night would "be enough" to make her "give [herself] up" to him, and from then on the days which were supposed to be good to her (but are instead filled with abuse) would "keep [their] trust." Unfortunately, he can't stay overnight.
More about how she only escapes through TV.
Even if she went to him for help, he couldn't do anything. (If she "shouts," he'll "only hear," not help.) If she "jumps" (attempts suicide), he won't be able to catch her.
The same as chorus 1, with more about how the narrator could save her if only he was able to stay. Maybe he's too cowardly to fight her abusive boyfriend, or maybe he is in a committed relationship elsewhere himself and can only visit her for a brief amount of time.
"No one's around," at 3am, because he can't stay with her overnight. She is the angel (because the narrator loves her and doesn't feel she deserves the abuse she gets), and she's finally jumped and committed suicide since she had no other way to escape the abusive relationship.

this song reaches out to anyone who has ever felt the stinging pain of love. ive been in an abusive relationship for almost 3 years, with a girl that is the most psychologically abusive person i have met in my life. she is my first love, she was the first girl i ever had sex with, and she was my best friend for years before we started dating. Ive been trying to find it within myself to pull away from her for sometime now because i no longer have the strength to hold onto something that doesnt exist. this song is what is giving me the courage to save myself and do what should have been done a long time ago.

This song was created for the movie of the same name FARAWAY SO CLOSE, by Wim Wenders, so most of the lyrics are referencing things from the movie. It is the sequel to WINGS OF DESIRE. In the movie, the angels are always hovering around us, watching us and listening to our thoughts, but they are far away in the sense that we can't see them. "If you look, you look through me." One of the angels decides to forego immortality to feel what it's like to be mortal, as he has fallen in love with a mortal. He is able to do this by making the fall "as an angel hits the ground." These were my favourite movies for a long time.
Good song... better remix... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/5/09
Hey, I loved Zooropa and didn't 'get' this song when I heard it. I thought it the weaker one of the album which seems to be a minority. I found the Craig Armstrong remix and it turned me around... so much more emphasis on the poetry and emotion behind it which was lacking from the original. Recommend a listen... on iTunes.

This song is about being in love with someone who is in a relationship where she is physically abused by the 3rd party, who isn't mentioned (or judged) in the song. The first stanza is after an episode of abuse, where just after being beat up, she finds herself in a convenience store, mind in a jumble - buying cigarettes, even though she doesn't smoke. I have a mental picture of the songwriter having gotten a call to pick her up late at night and witnessing this scene from a running car out in front of the store. The other lyrics suggest the way the songwriter views this person always letting their mind wander "up with the static and the radio" - anything in order to not think about the abuse or how to get out of the relationship. The song's lyrics show the pain of not being able to break through to this person who can't escape the abusive relationship.
Also, Zooropa is not their worst album. It has this song, but I prefer Lemon and Zooropa, easily my favorite two songs from ANY band, and here on the same album. Yet I wouldn't say it was their best album either, its weird.

"stay" isn't about a break-up. It's about a prostitute (and you can hear all the references) that a man has fallen in love with. But she cannot love him. she is incapable of love: "and when i touch you, you don't feel a thing." Such a beautiful song.

having watched this video, u can just turn the lights off and start watching the film -Wings of Desire (German title Himmel Ueber Berlin). I'd say the video is a wonderful interpretation of this film. Bit by bit the film overwhelms you and the only thing to do is sit and fish in and try comparisons. I'd say - a smashing musical Remake!

zooropa is, by and large, a shitty album. yeah, I said it. this, however, is one of the most beautiful songs in the world. i had forgotten the power and the beauty of U2 by the time this CD played thru...and then all of a sudden we get this! any song that can make me convulse in sobs like this one does is a GREAT one. you'd think the night would be enough, but it never is...most brutally lovely break-up song in the world. this is why I worhsip Bono as though he is a god.
