Lateralus | Reviewer: Corey | 1/10/09

I think the song is about being open minded and the struggles of it. "Black and White were all I see in my infancy" refers to one way or the other, then "red and yellow came to be, reaching out to me, helps me see" Red and yellow being the lines of "one way or the other". It's hard to explain, and of course, it's only my opinion. :)

Good song | Reviewer: OGT | 1/10/09

Good song. Good album. Do people think that members of TOOL read song reviews on a lyrics website, or are they are trying to prove they have some TOOL knowledge by putting James Keenan's army sobriquet in their lame ass reviews? Do they need recognition for some bullshit trivia and speculation that they think only they know about or perhaps a desire to teach others so they can finally lift their heads up? RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE

I think it is about the space->
" look through to these infinite possibilities."
.Black & White - when you look into space from Earth it's stars and sky.(for example)
"red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me," when you come closer you will see this.Maybe sun, hypernova explosion, spirals, whatever from space,it's infinity."following our will & wind we may just go where no one's been." Infinite of space, infinite possibilities,a place where no one's been.Space is infinity itself, isn't it?I think it is one of the possibilities, tool's songs don't have one meaning.
No way, tripping on acid? When they was tripping on acid this song should be called "chasing the white bunny" or sth like that ;d
sry for my english.

The Spiral | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/18/08

Its Funny you know, I wonder how many people know about the "lottuss flower" the flower of life. It's mathmaticly a spiral witch if done correctly spells out the last words "God?" ever spoke to man... go to San Francisco and try to find a specific old woman, she has these videos made by a bunch of Harvard professors and of the like, its called "Lottus: The Flower Of life" (but if you are not ready to have reality change then DON"T GO SEEKING THESE FILMS... then i think one can understand what riding the spiral is... :-)

Joe. Averager | Reviewer: Joe Ledford | 12/18/08

artist, art. description. never recognizing the true color in the first place and thats one being in another. its a gamee.. he has his own rules set up to win. so i might as well ride the spiral to the end

inspiring | Reviewer: Kale T. | 11/28/08

To me, this song has so much meaning, because I used to be the kind of person who would look at everything as "black and white" and would "over think and overanalyze" until I pulled myself into an introverted existence. I would miss opportunities because I was to busy contemplating every which way taking the opportunity would lead, and I would watch "my moment drawing way outside the lines" and be gone, that opportunity never again to show itself in my life. Then, I began to be less cautious about things. I stopped seeing things as just "black and white" and started seeing the reds and yellows, and realized that there are "infinite possibilities" for everything, and that the only way I could ever know what was to be was to step outside the line and embrace whatever may come, to continue forward and never look back with regret. To experience life not through sad ponderings from the sidelines, but to go and actually experience life. To “ride the spiral to the end”, all the way through life and all of it’s beauty and wonder and to have as much fun as I can, unfettered by meaningless pondering of what could be and to instead be!

This song has inspired me and changed my life like nothing before has, and for that, thanks Maynard.

Peace…

Dont be narrow-minded | Reviewer: Sam | 10/9/08

Theres no right or wrong answer....Tool rights some of their lyrics so that they can be interpreded by many different views. This particular song is written to form the fibinacci sequence. ya know..(0+1=1 1+1=2 2+1=3 3+2=5 5+3=8) its complicated but thats how the beginning of this song is written. Personally I think that ultimatly this song is about opening your mind to seek the unknown. To look through the infinte possibilities, embrace the desire, witness the beauty, swing on the spirl. I think this song has alot to do with space and whats out there.("& following our will & wind we may just go where no one's been.
we'll ride the spiral to the end & may just go where no one's been.spiral out. keep going.")Galaxies and what not..
To swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be human.Maynard is deffinatly influenced by the effects of acid but it makes it pure and beautiful. His words are real and inspiring, there words that make you think, make you question the unknown...hes a brilliant man, and I think it shows in this song. It shows what Tool, as a band, are capable of.

my perception | Reviewer: bendigo777 | 10/1/08

i believe that this song is about how what existence itself is is restricted by what we are able to see as possible
the second verse (i think) tells of how in infancy there is only black and white and it is only when the colors red and yellow come to him that he is able 2 see...dam im hell not explaining this rite lol but then he ses there is so much more that beckons to look through to these infinite possibilities...wat im tryin 2 say is wat exists is restricted 2 only the things that we hav proof or knowledge of their existence
so once we open our minds to believe the impossible than it will become possible and therefore come into existence

sorry im tired and im explaining this hell bad but ye tell if u agree or not and ur reasons y

"WRONG?" | Reviewer: Steve | 8/17/08

No one is right nor wrong about their conception and understanding of Maynard's lyrics. Don't be a "tool", that is the whole point of the band's overall message. So to anyone who thinks that the songs can easily be deciphered to any one meaning, is no better than the one-sided closed-minded ignorant fools that create misfortune for others.
Be free, enjoy the music for what it is, and isn't.

Ironic | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/29/08

I think it's kind of funny that everyone thinks so hard about what the song means when there probably is no right answer. Over thinking and over analyzing seperates the body from the mind. That's the ironic part.

This is who this workd. Acid is like a weaker form of what Tool really seeks. Tool is a band, which to my understanding, is attemtping to reach enlightenment via philosophical thinking. This is what I think- this song can mean many different things, but to be clear it is NOT about Tool tripping on acid. This song has a very deep point- if it didn't, this song wouldn't nearly be as popular. Tool has influenced my philosophical ideas, and I think they caused a major awakening in me.

Just a thought | Reviewer: Josh | 4/7/08

This is my personal favorite song from Tool, and I find many great meanings in it. For those of you who are calling some people wrong, really look at the lyrics. Tool writes their lyrics in a way that they can be interpreted differently, based on who views them and their life experiences. If other people find the song means something different than you think, don't call them wrong. I really like what all of you have come up with, and I really love the song and the band.

Your Wrong | Reviewer: dranyaM | 3/19/08

This song is all about tripping acid. The entire Lateralus is just experiences from the Tool band. That is why they have the human body broken down into sections on the cover. Because the cd is like a dissection of Tool the band.

What they said | Reviewer: Flakman | 1/11/08

I'm in agreeing. This is a truly awesome song. I feel that; as well as being obviously thought provoking, it's very powerful and has a lot of truth about the word and about we who inhabit it.

Trying not to look too deep into it, it looks to be about finding enlightenment and seeing how everything is connected concerning spirituality, nature and life. He looks to be saying not to be afraid of the unknown, to 'push the envelope' and see that all things are possible if you put your mind to it and to follow the feeling.

This is my humble opinion

... and he was probably on 'shrooms or something when he wrote this ;)
