The lyrics of this song have a lot of similarities to the story of a man in The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson. In the book there is a man a former porn actor that gets burned in a freak accident and is hospitalized.he is taken care by a mentally insane unknown woman who claims that he knows him for nearly 700 years. This man has a snake in his spine (a metaphor of his heavy drug addiction) that always reminds him of his former reckless life and his burned skin that needs to be cut off constantly in order for his skin to be reformed. Also the woman claims that she has a 1000 hearts that she must give. Check it out if you want

quit the knowing of what maynards songs are about. NONE of us do, ONLY HIM because they're his. sounds a hell of alot like heroin user lyrics though. got alot of friends who have been/are still on the stuff. I HATE YOU ALL EVEN MORE FOR TRYING TO EXPLAIN THESE SONGS TO ANYONE. With Tool songs you get what you want out of them. Hey Guess What? It will never be what maynard meant. Cause none of you are him.
He said it himself at a concert once, and only once! | Reviewer: Spencer | 11/20/09
The meaning of the song was stated by MJK at a concert just before he played it. He asked the audience if they had children, then said if you do this ones for you! Its about his son, being on the road, and being the father he wants to be and how scary it is. Period. Thats that! its not about heroin, shoes, falling in love, its about his son. Whos, as stated before, middle name is H. hello! H.

Hey... I'm a Brazilian girl and you guys probably thinking "Fuck, you should be listening to "axé", "samba" or "pagode" music"... I think most people think all Brazilian listen to that crock of shit.
Well I just wanted to say I LOVE TOOL... it's the best band ever. Like someone said once, "Without tool a lot of people wouldn't be able to make it through the day sane". I'm one of them. TOOL I LOVE YOU!!!

Tool can make you feel close 2 GOD and the devil for this is the reflection of the swaying of human life but this song is my favorite cause when a musician is making some songz and he is "swaying" the negative songz feels as if its the "snake" singing them himself in which he is using us as a "TOOL" 2 destroy others "Looking to turn my piss to wine"(my uncleanness into glory)
..but i believe this songz explains satan tryna hold u back and GOD pulling u forward basically...another thing is when youre depressed you actually at times feel "numb" unable 2 feel nor cry..and as the snake drowns he relize how he let the devil controlled his life and he overcomes as he looks 2 GOD having no fear recalling the times he died spiritually but this time he'll kill his flesh and will be reborn again..its sad how in the midst of these demonic songs you can her the artist true cry
heroin | Reviewer: heroin | 10/22/09
look the song is about heroin. turning my piss into wine=turning his life into something great. most time a snake bite is related to heroin because of the venom many people have used the expression "i got bit by a venomous snake and sliped into euphoria" the blood before me begs me to open my heart again heroin when shot up goes right to the the heart and they refer it to opening your heart heroin tempts you drains you and drags your life down. feel this coming over like a storm again. maynard talks about what most people call a rush after shooting up you get this rush feeling.
Maynard's son | Reviewer: Devon | 10/13/09
I saw some where that it was a bout how he feels about his son Devo H. Keenan. How MJK was treated as a child hints:What's coming through is alive.
What's holding up is a mirror.
But what's singing songs is a snake
Looking to turn my piss to wine.
Mirror meaning Devo. Snake meaning Maynard. My blood before me (Devo) begs me open up my heart again. Ne ways no one knows he could be singing about his shoes but Devo's middle name is only H.
Did it ever occur to you...? | Reviewer: Sergey | 9/17/09
When Maynard was a young boy, he was mollested by his priest. That became the foremost influence on all of his music. "But what's singing songs is a snake, Looking to turn my piss to wine." He's referring to a preacher spreading, what to the religious, is the sweet message of god. Turns out he wasn't so pure(thus the snake)
There are clues throughout that he is referring to that time. The best would be the verse
"I am too connected to you
To slip away, fade away.
Days away I still feel you
Touching me, changing me,"
This song is merely his personal turmoil and eventual triumph. He talks about how for years he lived with the pain and fear from being used and deceived by someone who he would've regarded as a large and imoprtant figure in his life, and, more imoprtantly, someone he trusted.
For years he suffered. But that part of him which give this memory any power is dead.
"And as the walls come down
And as I look in your eyes
My fear begins to fade
Recalling all of the times
I have died
and will die.
It's all right."
With these words, he can move on. The past can't hurt him anymore.

This song is so good im in love with the riff that comes in at 0.40 .Adam is my favourite guitarist of all time i love it how he creates these enormous atmospheres through his offbeat and unorthodox way of playing and how he can make even simple riffs in tools songs (beleive me there are not many!) so powerfull and haunting. Genius, and so hard to replicate:)

The heroin one sounds closer than anything. But honestly, you are supposed to interpret it in any way that fits you. Thats why some of their songs are all over the place because they want you to relate with it. Be in past relationship, drug abuse, depression, or bad times that you've risen above. I'm fairly sure it means alot of things. This song means to me "watch yourself fight yourself." In a relationship aspect. You're looking at yourself in this situation and hoping it'll get better. Somethings making you stay. And you've felt it all before and just want to believe you can trust somebody, hopefully this person. I don't want to let go. But I don't want to stay. Just know I have died before. And after you, will die again. It's alright.
Songs About The Birth of His Son | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/4/09
This song is about his son: Check Wikipedia... Speculation has surrounded the song "H." The "meaning" of this song has seldom been detailed by the band, as they do not regularly comment on such things. However on several occasions, specifically on November 23, 1996 during a show at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia, Maynard does grant some insight into the meaning of the song. Speaking to the audience he says, "Any of you ever seen those old Warner Bros. cartoons? Sometimes there's that one where the guy is trying to make a decision and he's got an angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other. Seems pretty obvious, right? The angel is trying to give him good advice while the devil is trying to get him to do what's bad for him. It's not always that simple though. A lot of times they're not really angels or devils but friends giving you advice, looking out for your best interest but not really understanding what's going to be best for you. So it kind of comes down to you. You have to make the decision yourself. This song is called H." The song was discussed live during a few other shows around this time, one example being on February 23, 1997, when Maynard introduced this song by referring to the shoulder angel and devil, and also said it's about a hurtful yet dependent relationship.[13] In an interview Keenan gave in December of 1996, he commented, "My son's name is Devo H. That's all I'll say." It is also of note that the song's working title was "Half Empty", as it was introduced during a mini-tour of California by the band in December 1995. In the book, "Teachings of Don Juan, a Yaqui Way of Knowledge", the author refers to a character named H. Keenan.

TO ME, this song is about Maynard overcoming his "act". What's holding up is a mirror; Part of coming into 'oneness' or divinity, is realizing the world around you is your mirror, and I believe as he speaks of the snake, he is refering to his act(reality). If you ever go on a conscious path and sway back and forth between reality and divinity, you will see a whole other meaning to 'And I feel this coming over like a storm again now.'
When he says;
'I am too connected to you
To slip away, fade away.
Days away I still feel you
Touching me, changing me'
I believe he is talking about his oversoul, or divinity since I feel the exact same way.
Getting in tune with the divine is about killing or clearing your act. I believe he says Considerately killing me cuz as his divinity kills who he 'was' (his snake), it's doing so for his greater good. Considerately.
Crying is expected as you realize how fake a life you were living, and as you transform your reality, you realize how many times you should have cried in the moment. As he cries, he drowns out his act, and realizes there is nothing to fear, since reality is actually nothing.
If you read lyrics to ALMOST all other tool songs, you can see connections, most are conscious songs, with amazing depth. In any case and no matter how you interpret them, they can have amazing depth. Thats why I love tool so much.
The real meaning of the song! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/2/09
The song is about falling in love with someone.
He's been down that road before, and got hurt,
so now he's scared to open up to anyone, and when he does, he expects the worst, hence " I DON'T MIND!" Everything else in regards to his son is true, but it's his son's mother that hurt him!
my opinion | Reviewer: travis | 1/29/09
well to me its about overcoming his heroin addiction. which is the snake in this song. because hes going to be a father. which his sons middle name is in fact H. for example in the song he says. "the snake behind me hisses what my damage could have been" to me sayin he could of really hurt or died from heroin. and then "my blood before begs me open up my heart again" to me sayin his blood which would be his son. and when he is talking about the snake drowning and his fear fading. that he thinks hell be ok without the drug. and he doesnt need it anymore. but he was scared to leave it. but thats just my opinion on the song. thanks for reading.
Beautiful/Sad | Reviewer: Robyn | 1/28/09
This song is absolutely beautiful it is by far one of my all time favorite Tool songs its about addiction and the struggle to overcome it, or to try to overcome it and then eventually relapsing.
Recalling all of the times I have died
And will die
It's alright
I don't mind
