"ranting and pointing his finger at everything but his heart".... and you think hes talking about jesus, that sounds a little retarded just on the base logic of who jesus was believed to be. sounds like hes talking about a generalization of religion, considering he talks about the martyr being suprise that he was called upon to die might suggest the deception and untruthfulness to leaders of any religion not just one.

The line "Warn when some chid might chill,nine-one-two" is the most telling and coincedently puzzling. Warn(of a danger/threat/consequence of not excepting what "'HE'had to say") when some 'child'(a naive/uninformed person) might 'chill'(not have concern), nine-one-two(near but off of emergency # 911/ not a real concern). If this person had a REAL warning, NINE-ONE-ONE/911. What do y'all think?

I'm fairly certain that this is just an anti-theistic song. I mean, you'd have to be deaf to think that Maynard isn't talking about religion itself here, and all the fool martyrs that died for no real cause.
Jessica is on CRACK!!! | Reviewer: drumguy | 4/20/11
Tool did NOT become A Perfect Circle. APC is a completely different band, just with the same singer. This is Maynards side project, just like Volto! is Danny Carey's side project. Wow...get your facts straight. Tool only puts out an album every 2-4 years, but that has nothing to do with any lawsuits or the band changing it's name. Sheesh!!!
Ya why not | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/14/11
This song is easy to figure out all you have to do is listen to the words. He had alot to say he had a lot of nothing to say is about alk the political lies and promises that every prlerson says they can bring. Get off you fucking cross is for all the fake or pretend mesiahs.
Satire | Reviewer: Peter | 3/6/11
I was thinking Hicks until the "allot of nothing to say" part. Carey said it was about El Ron Hubbard, meaning allot of the song is supposed to be sarcastic, perhaps an ode to the way Hicks performed.
well. . . | Reviewer: megan | 12/15/10
fuck yeah "zumer 7" you tell those fuck faces!i'm glad someone understands some meaning behind Maynard's lyrics. just because someone may take them another way, doesn't mean they're wrong.
Usually his lyrics do not say what the song may actually be about, but that's what Tool is all about. Tool's music is about creativity of the mind. he writes his songs not only about things that have happened to him & hardships he's been through, but also so Tool fans can relate to that & take it into their own perspective.
also, Maynard IS infact atheist. i guess only dumbasses that don't listen to Tool or Maynard's other band's lyrics wouldn't know that.

So no one seems to think that the song is actually about the bands good friend Bill Hicks? A man that dedicated his life to helping others see clearly... Trying his hardest with his comedy routines to open people's eyes, and think for themselves.
"He had a voice that was strong and loud."
It all fits. That and the album is dedicated to Hicks. They even have a snippet of his show on the album... At least that's how I read it anyway
what i think | Reviewer: ben | 11/24/10
Yea I'd this song is probably more about your average run of the mill fake messiah. I think the line towards the end kind of points that out: get off your fucking cross, we need the fucking space, to nail the next fool martyr. So yeah, L. Ron Hubbard comes to mind, but I'm not really sure if Eulogy was written with him in mind specifically. The only real reason that can be speculated is Tool's other run-ins with Scientology- the famed 1993 show at a Scientology owned venue where Maynard bleeted like a sheep, and of course the "fuck L. Ron Hubbard" line in AEnima, which probably came as a result of the former. But let's not get to thinking that Tool holds any more disdain for Scientology than for other religions. They're quoted as saying they don't really believe in organized religion of any kind. So Eulogy's message can be applied to any false prophet you want- Hubbard, Jesus, Muhhamad, Osama Bin Laden, Pat Robertson, whoever.
about whom? | Reviewer: tool_fan_96 | 10/8/10
There is a strong belief amongst the music community that this song is actually about Henry rollins who did guest vocals on Bottom and was a major pain in the ass to Maynard. Maynard himself has said in countless interviews that is about anybody you want to apply it to that decides to get on a soapbox and declare themselves enlightened to a point that they want to press upon your beliefs and that it is the role of free will to be able to decide for yourself.
Meaning? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/16/10
It's an amazing song, pure and simple. Take from it what you want, it's meaning is what you decide it is for you. That's the magic of almost every Tool song. If this is about Jesus to you, then it's about Jesus. If it's about L. Ron Hubbard, then it's about Hubs. If it's about flesh eating Unicorns, then it's about that. To me it's about people wanting a leader and latching on to anyone who rises above the crowd and proclaims themself a martyr and leader only to show in the end that they are nothing just like the rest of us.
The only songs I would argue that have very clear and specific meaning are 10,000 Days and Wings for Marie. I believe I even read an interview once where Maynard makes mention of them and explains why they don't often play them in live sets. They carry a very big and personal significance to him and it's hard to duplicate it all in a live setting and he'd rather not perform them then do a sub-standard job of them.
Whatever | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/22/10
This song is about whatever the fuck u want it to be just like allof tools songs. Find me somewhere that Maynard explains every damn lyris for every song. There isn't because the meanings are locked in him and therefore his songs are whateve ryou want them to mean. Man this is what art is.

wanna know something cool?
this song was sued by a church and so the band had to like stop making music so they remaned themselves "a perfect circle" and for like 3 years or whatever they made "a perfect circle" albums, of course i hope all of you already know this, but if you dont check em out! its seriously the same people!!! =) just you know fyi..
Not about Jesus.... | Reviewer: Jim | 7/1/10
This is about Ron Hubbard. Who claimed he would reincarnated later in the future after death, to his followers. He was a very loud person...
"Not all martyrs see divinity.
But at least you tried."
...... Implies that there are "divine" martyrs, but he just isnt one of them.
"
"I'm too smart when you're invisible by the bone and the symbol on you. So he bashes his skull through the window while over looking the sea." ........Symbols are commonly used on Scientology book jackets, and many of them have/had a Caveman with a bone. Hubbard was a self appointed Commodore in the Navy. This should explain the "sea" reference.
"Will you? Will you now?
Would you die for me?
Don't you fuckin lie." ........... Obviously they wouldnt be talking about someone who *did in fact die for people. (Jesus). Hubbard always claimed he was not afraid of death, and would in fact be reincarnated. Unlike Jesus, Hubbard never did *die for people. He had a stroke at his home.
"
Come down.
get off your fuckin cross.
We need the fuckin space to nail the next fool martyr." ......... Refers to all of the martyrs who pretend to have the same intentions as Christ.
/end discussion
