Not bad, right up till the point we went to Iraq | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/20/09

At the time this was written, I was all for it. Personally, I think Afghanistan was the right thing to do, aside from the fact that things there are a complete mess in terms of human and womens rights. And after over three thousand people died in new york, I think we had a right to go and deal with things, since the Afghan government was only supporting and harboring those who commited the act.

Iraq however was idiocy. There was no solid proof on what they were supposedly doing, and the momment we set foot in there, our credibility as the ones who got attacked and who had the right for retribution went right out the window.

Thus, in the spirit of the song at the time it was written, I applaud Toby Keith. I just wish we hadn't gone and made an idiot out of ourselves by going to Iraq.

Patriotism... | Reviewer: Lainey | 9/25/09

Before anyone condemns me for speaking my mind, let me first say this: I have two relatives in this godforsaken war, both for very different reasons. One one side of the family, it's an uncle, and on the other, it's a cousin four years older than me. I hate thinking that they might both be lost to this war - if you can really even call it that.

This is not my uncle's first time in a dangerous warzone - he joined when he was 17 (lied about his age and somehow got away with it) because he was disgusted with the injustice that the government got away with, and wanted to make a difference from the inside. That was over 20 years ago. He's nearing his much-anticipated early retirement, and according to him, everything out there is relatively boring, but that doesn't make it any harder, waiting for him to come back. We all keep expecting to hear that he died - he's one of those guys who'd stop at the side of a road to pick up a kitten, and get accidentally killed in "friendly fire", because he wasn't standing exactly where they expected him to be.

My cousin jumped headfirst into the war first chance he got, and I can tell you this: he doesn't want to die for his country. He doesn't care about defending anybody's rights. He just wants to kill bad guys. He wants to live out some kind of Rambo-style fantasy. And, for the most part, he is. He's currently trained specifically in close range combat - he's one of the guys who goes in and makes sure all the bad guys are killed without raising too big of a ruckus. And he's HAPPY about this, because he's taking out the 'bad guys'.

The fact that there are so-called patriots out there who insist on fighting a war that never should have been has me disgusted. They're dragging out a war against an entire NATION of innocent people for something that a relatively small group of religiopolitical zealots. I DARE any of you to tell me that isn't true, along with proof as to why it's not. "Our gun is bigger than theirs, so why should they get away with hurting us?" is NOT a valid response, as it in no way clarifies the acts of a 'civilized' nation.

Ireland. Italy. Sweden. Safe, stable countries that have an extremely high quality of life - certainly doing much better than the beloved US of A. Why insist that you're the best, just because others are worse? The fact is, there will always be better, and there will always be worse. Canada and the United States are two relatively young countries, both having a long way to go before they can claim the stability of the aforementioned countries.

@ Lt. Pritchett: While I respect your perspective, and am sensitive to the fact that you've got your hackles raised over some of the ignorance spouted here, I think you, in particular, are a pompous ass for not recognizing that you're fighting a hypocritical war that has already condemned too many people to death and oppression. I am one hundred percent for a war that is rooted in logic, truth, and true defense. I admire any attempt to truly defend the helpless. The US has lost virtually any status it once held in the eyes of the world for this ridiculous parade of arrogance they're calling 'war'.

the best song ever | Reviewer: josh | 9/24/09

This is a song worth 5 stars out of 5 and Toby also deserves 5 out of 5. I have listened to many songs by him and he is one great artist and if you do not like him then there is something wrong with you. I am sure all his fans agree. okay i love this song. i wish people would get the int that nobody REALLY likes the war. but we have every right to defend our country. our soilders are doing a wonderful job. God, i would hate to see whoever says this is a god awful song like that one guy did run this country, then we'd all be screwed. this song has a meaning to it. and toby kieth did a great job with the lyrics. You people should be ashamed you yourselves.I've seen people that I consider family die in this war.I have lost my brother in this war. The way some of you were talking it was as if you hate this country that I and others have so bravely fought for. You don't even know how stressful it is waking up every day not knowing if your going to die this day, even in base you don't feel safe. I hope you people are happy with your selves and what you've been saying.

I hope you people are happy with your selves and what you've been saying. I love this song and the fact that the troops love it should be enough. It is a great song with great lyrics. I dont know who that person was that said only New York would get attacked because the rest of us were to stupid but all I can say is, ARE YOU HIGH? Sounded like he might have a little hatrid for the USA. No doubt Toby's song is charged with emotion. It expresses how we as a nation hurt from the result of 9/11 and the loss of our wonderful men and women who continue to put their lives on the line for their fellow citizens.

For me, it stirs feelings of guilt and of lack of gratitude for our veterans who sacrificed so much for us on so many levels.

Overall I feel the song goes beyond the obvious.
I don't put a face to the anger that the words are aimed at. I like to sing along with this song and join in with wanting to kick some ass to end the way we as people treat one another.

Looking at all the comments that are offered here, I guess Toby offered us a chance to take it all in and think about it. We all can thump our chests as say we're right, but to make this a better world starts with us as individuals and how we treat one another. Toby Keith Is certainly an Angry American, the song is full of raw emotion. Unfortunately Keith's anger prevents him from critically examining the issue, and as a result the song feels ignorant and offensive instead of patriotic. The only information given about the "enemy" is in the line "A mighty sucker punch came flying in from somewhere in the back" enforcing the stereotype that Americans cannot identify Afghanistan on a map. It gives the impression that Keith blames the entire middle east for 9/11 and lines like "Man, we lit up your world like the 4th of July" trivialize the deaths of innocent civilians in Afghanistan whose only crime was sharing a country with terrorists. Their deaths were just as tragic as those in the world trade center. I find it disheartening that a song that's purpose is to unite us and support this country and it's troops cannot rise above the cloud of anger and fear that 9/11 created. When we lash out in fear and ignorance, the terrorists win.

I't obvious... | Reviewer: Atomic | 5/26/09

Government propaganda. Simple as that. The government is willing to do anything it takes to get us to side with its terrible decisions.

This song is a prime example. Have a musical artist make a patriotic song, and you get overly-patriotic people. Just look at a large amount of the unintelligent "reviews" with the grammar of a 4-year-old. If you're going to defend your nation, do it right and use grammar. You're making Lady Liberty look like a hick.

How trite! It sounds like a ten year old fat kid wrote it while crying and eating a hot dog!
That bit about his dad's bung eye! Is this for real?
