The sex just isn't good enough for him (when happiness doesn't work), he barely even feels it (I'd rather feel pain than nothing at all). Neither does she, apparently (you're sick of feeling numb)... So he tries something new (I like it rough... when the lights go out you'll understand). And songs are not meant to be interpreted by the listener to mean whatever they want them to mean. Songs mean what the artist wants them to mean. This song is, quite clearly, about rough sex. And it's not about how awesome rough sex is, either. It's about how he can't feel anything else anymore. Does it sound like he's really happy in the song? (When happiness doesn't work... sick of feeling numb... this world is filled with hurt... anger and agony are better than misery). It's about how his relationship is so dead that rough sex is a last resort to try and feel something... to try and feel ANYTHING. It's about heroin addiction. "Pain" is the needle. Anger and agony are what you feel, but it's better than the misery of needing that fix and it being unattainable. "I'd rather feel pain(the needle and the drug entering the bloodstream) than nothing at all(being sober)" The're so delusional about the drugs being "good" they try to convince their friend/lover/what have you to take a journey into their world and see what the drug has done to their inner psyche.
