the song is based on a true story: the girlfriend is real, she had an abortion and they never got married...but she never killed herself
great | Reviewer: A. Smith | 8/30/07
this is one of my all time favorites.. its based on a true story too. The verve pipe had a girl that they sort of passed along in the group and used her until she killed herself
My Input | Reviewer: Karen | 8/20/07
I know this song is about the girlfriend havin the abortion and all that..but it can mean so much more if you use it as a metaphore. my best friend and i were best friends from 4th grade until freshman year, we had a fallout over a boy and we had a "best friend fight" well then she got into a car accident and died before we could make ammends, and this song makes me think so much and I think about her all the time when I hear this song. I actually typed it up and put it on her grave as my "apology"...it can mean whatever you want it to.

When it says "Stop a babies breath and a shoe full of rice" I thought it had something to do with a wedding because babies breath is a flower used often in rose bouquets and grooms often have rice in their shoes after their wedding. I'm not sure how it would fit into the song though.
my take on this song | Reviewer: Hilarie | 7/22/07
"When I was young I knew everything
And she a punk who rarely ever took advice
Now I'm guilt stricken, sobbin' with my head on the floor
Stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice, no"
this part is about the guy's girl friend being pregnat and getting an aboprtion.
"My best friend took a week's vacation to forget her
His girl took a week's worth of valium and slept
And now he's guilt stricken sobbin' with his head on the floor
Thinks about her now and how he never really wept he says"
this part is about his friend leaving his girlfriend and she killed her self by ODing
"We've tried to wash our hands of all of this
We never talk of our lacking relationships
And how we're guilt stricken sobbin' with our heads on the floor
We fell through the ice when we tried not to slip, we'd say"
this part is about the guy and his friend both feeling guilty but not want to admit any of the happenings are there fault so they kind of ignore it all.and the falling through the ice part means that they were too busy ignoring that these things were happening. and then all of a sudden it happened.
the chorus inplys they are not going to blame themselves and that they were too young for the consequences of their actions.

This song has been epic in the incarnation of my life. It takes me through the relationship of my first love in college. WOW! Every time I hear it I'm taken back to the time in my life where I was the happiest, as well as the saddest.
Great song | Reviewer: J Gilley | 6/20/07
Love singing this song, it's one of those songs you can sing along to with a clenched fist and lots of emotion. It's one of those "cheesy rock" songs, but really isn't "cheesey".
this song has been around a long time! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/16/07
this is a great song, that has been around at least ten years...it is just now coming back...maybe it has been on grey's anatomy????? the song is definately about regrets...which we all have...and making mistakes...which we all have done! basically, it reminds us that we are all human, and that our actions have consequences!
