The rest of the friends, including the singer are racked with guilt... The line "I won't be held responsible" is more of a denial line than one of true conviction. "I never thought we die for our sins, we were only Freshmen" talks about how young and irresponsible they were. My favorate line (might be my favorate of any song), "we fell through the ice when we tried not to slip", talks about how they might have been dealing with day-to-day crisis, but never took a look at the bigger picture and saw that there foundation was shakey and flawed.
